Garden and landscape plants do, of course, thrive better in good soil with plenty of organic mat ter to help hold air, moisture and plant food, and give it a loose structure that permits roots to develop naturally, i With a little effort, you too, can have such soil around your land scape plants and in your flower beds or vegetable plots, suggests County Agent C. W. Overman. Many homeowners struggling with clay or very sandy soil are constantly throwing away mate rials that could be used to im prove it. Grass clippings, leaves, weeds, even vegetable parings and fruit peels from the kitchen, will decompose into suitable material for addition to the soil. In city and suburban gardens, where large quantities of manure are difficult to obtain, a compost pile can supply much of the or ganic material needed for grow ing shrubs, flowers, and vegeta bles. To make compost, build up al ternate layers of soil and organic, waste materials. Over a five-or six-inch layer of clippings, par- Vacancies Open For Inspectors Vacancies for construction, me chanical and electrical inspectors at annual salaries ranging from $3,670 to $4,525 are now open for examinations in the Wilmington District of the Army Corps of En gineers. An announcement by the Dis trict Board of Civil Service Ex aminers advises that the positions are located in various sections of North Carolina, and involve the supervision and inspection of con tract construction of numerous projects in the state. The report says further that positions in oth er federal agencies, in addition to the Corps of Engineers, may be filled as a result of the examina tions. Applicants will not be required to report for a written test but will be rated on the extent and quality of their experience and training relative to duties of the position. Such ratings will be based on the applicants’ state ments and on any additional evi- 1 dence secured by the commission.' Information and application forms may be obtained from the local Post Office, or from the Civ il Service Examiners, U. S. Army Engineer District, Corps of Engi neers, Wilmington, N. C. Chappell’s Cow Sets High Milk Record A registered Guernsey cow, Sylvias Hi Sue of S B owned by Clarence Chappell, Jr., of Belvi dere, has completed an official production record, according to the American Guernsey Cattle Club at Peterborough, N. H. This retjord was for 13,466 pounds of milk and 579 pounds of fat. “Sue” was a junior four year-old, and was milked two times daily for 305 days while on test. This official production record was supervised by North Caro lina State College. RIDING WITH 7 THE COLONIALS By JIM NASH 1 Last Friday night, Manager Ed 1 Grebenstein and Coach Paul George had a good look at their team'in action when the Colonials traveled to Camden for an exhi bition game with that squad. Al most everyone had a chance to play as the Colonials bested Cam den in seven innings 18-7. __ Several outstanding plays were made by Edenton. A lead-off borne run by veteran outfielder, Dick Setliff, got the action under way. Centerfielder John Basich made 'll spectacular catch to rob Camden of a certain extra-base The pitching looked good gawl should be as good as any in the league. (Nitrogen hastens decompo sition). Then add one or two inches of soil. Continue to build up to two or three feet, begin ning and ending with soil. The sides of the pile should be kept vertical (temporary wire fencing that, can be moved away later, makes this easier), and the top should be level or slightly lower in the center to catch and hold moisture. In dry seasons, sprinkle the pile to keep it moist. The compost you build this year will be ready for use next year, or possibly sooner, depending upon the raw material you use, says Mr. Overman. For a con stant supply, compost gardeners find it convenient to keep two piles—one to build upon while the previous one is being used. Turning and mixing a “ripen ing” pile will help the decompo sition process and produce a com post mixture of more satisfactory fineness. To do this, slice down through the layers with a spade, turning and mixing as you form a new pile. In doing this, you can observe how near your com-! post is to being ready for use. In using compost, mix with ad ditional soil, or with sand and soil. For most plants, additional fer tilizer will be needed. Goodness Sake! A disgusted parent wrote a note of complaint to the teacher and wound it up with this: “If all Heibert learns in school is to swear. I’ll keep him home and teach him myself.” Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness. It bas no taste. —Mrs. Gaskell. THE CHOWAN -HERALD, EDKHTON.
