I—SECTION THREE PAGE FOUR Refresher Courses By VA Helping >i Mentally 111 Vets j Refresher courses in business ' skills, taught by volunteer teach- [ ere, are helping bring mentally ill veterans on the road back to J normal living. 1 » Such courses are conducted by \ volunteers from the community | for patients at most Veterans ] Administration mental hospitals, | under supervision of staff thera-1 pists, the' agency says. VA cited its hospital at Roa-! noke. Va., as an example of the program. There, patients are re-J learning typing, shorthand, | mathematics, accounting, and I statistics. Dr. Joseph B. Bounds, manager i of the hospital, and several of the | patients in the courses formerly j worked as secretaries, typists, or j clerks. : After a few weeks in the class es, they begin to regain part of their lost skills, Dr. Bounds said, and more important, comprehend that they can re-learn and hope to resume useful work when they leave the hospital. As patients gain confidence in the courses, many perform tasks in offices of the hospital, for the therapeutic value of the work, he said. Dr., Bounds said although the courses have been organized at the Roanoke hospital only six months, one of the patients, a fonner legal secretary, has re turned to her old job in her heme state at a salary of S7O, per week. Memory Selection: “Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” —Joshua 1:9. Lesson Text: Numbers 27:12-23: Deuteronomy 34:9-12; Joshua 1. Our lesson for today concerns Moses and Joshua, their charac ters and their qualities of leader ship, and is intended to inspire us to develop the character traits that all good leaders should pos sess. Taking up our Bibles and studying the lesson text, we find an accounting of the Lord com manding Moses to “lay his hand upon Joshua, the son of Nun,” and the succession of Joshua to the leadership of the Israelites upon the death of Moses. We also read of the conditions of leader ship imposed by God upon Josh ua, in which is defined, very clearly, the sort of man God con sidered suitable to be a leader, and one who would be admirably suited to carry out God’s wishes for the children of Israel. As in so many instances cited in the Bible, we can apply the principle broadly to ourselves and to the world in which we live today, and Chowan County Churches EDENTON BAPTIST REV. R. N CARROLL. Let us analyze the characteris tics of a good leader. Let us take one of the greatest leaders in Bib lical history, specifically, and see what made him “tick”. Let us, in other words, take Moses. Firstly, Moses was a scholar. He was Wise in the ways of prac tical livihg. This was experience, a great necessity in leadership. But Moses’ leadership rested on much more than this, although we ought not to forget that God, in Moses’ case, used a prepared mind, just as he can use a pre pared mind today. Secondly, Moses was a man of faith. He knew God personally, and out of this fellowship he was commissioned with leading the children of Israel to the Promised Land. But, primarily, he was a man of character. One of the most basic assets of Moses’ lead ership was his thoughtfulness for others. We see this in his con cern for a fellow Hebrew who was being abused, and we see it again when he protected the sev -len daughters of Jethro at the watering place, and in his prayer for food, water, and divine pro tection for his people. This con cern for others continued right up to the last day of his life, when he prayed God to give his i people a leader in his place.
