To the visiting guests, both military and civilian, who have come to view this ceremony I would like to extend the welcome of our and our pledge of cooperation and full support of this undertaking, both in the construction phase and upon commissioning of this vital defense installation. As you may know, it | is being constructed for the sup | port of one of the newest and ’ most far reaching additions to the Navy’s air arm, the Martin P6M Sea Master. These aircraft and the men who will operate them will make up the latest innova tion in the concept of mobile striking forces. Their contribu tion to the National Defense will be immeasurable. We may all be proud that the Navy has select- 1 ed our area for the location of the first base of this kind and en trusted us with its perpetual keeping. “To impress all present with the magnitude of this project I would like to quote several figures asso ciated with the construction and operation of this station. The Navy will spend approximately 45 million dollars on construction of! these facilities. Some 60% or 271 million dollars will be expended in this area for labor and mate rials. When this base is complet ed it will support some 2,487 mili tary personnel and employ about 194 civilians. Annual expendi tures for maintenance and opera tions will amount to about 1.5 million dollars including civilian payrolls. The annual military payroll will approximate 9 million dollars. We must stand ready to receive this economic stimu lus with progressive ideas and the willingness to invest our la bors in transmitting them into ac- , tion which will benefit both the , Navy and our community. “The military personnel who i will make their homes with us will have problems which only we can solve. They, with their dependents, will look to us for , support in their religious, edu- , cational, and social lives, as well , as their economic needs. Massie Hughes, commander of naval air bases in the Fifth Naval Dis- ; trict, another speaker, said he was delighted over the return of the Navy to Harvey Point, pointing out the pleasant rela tions existing when the base was previously in operation. “This is the beginning of a big, adventure,” said** the Admiral. I “Many problems will face us be- J fore the day the base is finally completed, but I’m sure we'll, j come out of it with a develop-1 (meat for which we all can bei justly proud.” Both speakers referred to the inadequacy of roads leading to the base and urged people in this area to plead with the pow ers that be to lose no time in constructing ‘highways which will take care of the traffic to and from the base. The base will be the home of the Martin P6M Sea Master jet seaplanes. A group of dignitaries oc cupied the speakers’ stand, in cluding Mayor Ernest Kehayes of Edenton, Mayor V. N. DAIRY MONTH STRESSED AT ROCKY HOCK MEETING “June Is Dairy Month” was much in evidence at the Rocky Hock Club meeting on Tuesday night. Three tasty and eye appealing toppings for ice cream were prepared by Judy Evans and Annie Ruth Nixon, 4-H Club members. The toppings intro duced to the ladies were “Apple Delight,” a green-tinted apple sauce topping sprinkled with fluffy cocoanut; “Nutty Spe cial,” which combined crunchy peanut butter and honey, and “Berry Sundae,” featuring a frozen strawberry topping. In their dairy foods demon stration, the girls stressed the importance of milk in everyone’s | diet, saying that milk is the I most nearly perfect food yet I known to man. . To further emphasize “June ! Dairy Month,” the hostess, Mrs. i Tommy Leary, served ice cream with cookies and salted pecans nrn- ' 1 ' [for refreshments. Georgia Skinner and Kay Lowe, members of Advance Local 4-H Club, also gave a demonstration at the club meeting. “The In vader” was nicely presented by the girls and gave helpful infor mation on the control of clothes moths. Various effective insecti cides were discussed as well as other control measures. The women were told precautionary steps they should take when using these insecticides.
