NORTH CAROLINA- THURSDAY JULY 24, 1858. * iSSm ■ . t w.flj V, v SALAD DRESSING Mrs. Helen Nicholls is ready to eat her hat, an entry in the Sandys Flower Hat Show in Hamilton, Bermuda. Mrs. Nicholls, who’s from Paget, Bermuda, raided her vegetable garden for the chapeau, which has baby car rots fanning out over a crown of lettuce leaves. Asparagus fern adds a finishing touch. The Eskimos had seen explorers ( employ it to prize great icebergs apart or destroy some harmful obstruction. They had taken this English word over bodily into their language. In awed tones at j times they spoke it. The mis- j sionary now adopted it, and taught his little flock the prayer. I He told the Lindberghs of his «x-' perience. On the Sunday morning of their stay the visitors attended church. The swarthy natives entered in their furry garments and took part heartily in the service. When the time came for the Lord’s Prayer, the aviator and his wife could catch only one word, for j which they were listening. agreed that the translator had made a happy discovery. The worshipers began rever ently with bowed heads, praying in the Eskimo tongue “Our Fa ther ...” As they reached the concluding portion of the great payer which Christ gave His dis ciples, they repeated thus the sol emn words of ascription, “for i Thine is the kingdom, and the [ dynamite and the glory, for ever j and ever. Amen.” I The people of Alaska are now jubilant and shouting over the statehood which, after long years of petitioning, 'they have attain ed. With a state twice the size of Texas, with billions in natural wealth—m ! nes, and fisheries, and forests—they are expecting and olanning a glorious future. On August 26th they will cast their votes for or against becoming the 1 49th state, and every one knows what their decision will be. On the same day they will nominate men for state offices, approve state boundaries, and accept oth-' er provisions of the recent con- j gressional act. * . | At this momentous juncture they might remember the found ing of another famous common wealth. nearly three centuries ago, and the words of its found-, er: “If men are not governed by God, they will be ruled by tyr ants.” Heavenly power—divine dyna mite—this is what the great Quaker, William Penn, wanted for his state. » j Realism will at length be found to surpass imagination, and to suit and savor all litera-' ture. —Mary Baker Eddy, j Writing is like religion. Our beloved Church believes in and teaches the constant presence of'God, not just in church on Sunday, but in our everyday lives. And it goes farther than that, in its con tinued insistence down through the years on the importance of the frequent celebration of the Holy Communion and frequent reception of this Sacrament by all members of the church. You see, we believe in the REAL presence of the Son of God in the consecrated elements of the Communion. Yes, it takes faith in God, but we find that faith to be tremendously rewarding as we re ceive, not two or three nr four times a year, but weekly or even more-often, the coinfort and strength which accompany this communion with Goa. Our Lord said,. "Do this ...” He said, "This is My body . . . this is My blood ...” We accept His direction, and we accept the fact of His REAL presence realizing that God’s ways are beyond our understanding. We don’t make lengthy explanations of the mystery of the Holy Communion. Why are they neces-. sary when we have faith in God? | You, too, can find great strength and com fort in the Sacraments of the Episcopal Church. We invite you to learn more about them.
