Ocean Highway Plans
For *SB-59 Outlined
Continued From Page 1. Section 1
“ ‘Cap’ left that meeting hap
py and pleased at the demonstrat
ed spirit of understanding of mu
tual interests and the spirit of
mutual cooperation expressed
He felt that the future wag very ;
bright for the Ocean Hlway As-1
•ociation as a traffic producing!
end development organization for
all the coast, from New York to
Florida and for the ferry and the
soon-to-be realized Chesapeak
Bay tunnel project.
“We shall miss ‘Cap’ but we will
not falter in carrying on to ful
realization the future he envis
ioned for this association to whict
he had contributed so much.
“In the season ahead we must
make sure that our membership
will be increased, that a millior
or more of our 1959 improved
Ocean Hiway map folders will be
printed, and will be distributed
nationally, along with ferry
schedules and motorists’ guides.
Our newspaper and magazine ad
vertising program must be ex
panded and every possible op
portunity taken to obtain even
increased free publicity to pro
mote the Ocean Hiway as the fa
vored North-South route between
New York and Florida. In our
operation this season we will re
ceive from and will give to the
Chesapeake Bay Ferry District
the fullest cooperation. Our in
terest is theirs and theirs is ours,
for the Ocean Hiway is the North-
South route that serves the bay
ferries and that will serve the
tunnel.
“This season we will have the
largest and finest membership in
our history, and on our board of
directors are members of whose
active work and interest we are
certain. All members will be <
called on to do their part in this
cooperative non-profit association
which functions so well in their
behalf. Our headquarters staff,
headed by Bill Schwartz is capa
ble, experienced and wonderfully j
alert to everything for the good
of the Ocean Hiway and all its
members. Alan Schenck and Joe
Grace are very important and val
uable parts of the team that
brings ever increasing national
recoenition to and acceptance of
the Ocean Hiway.
“This season finds our route
name-marked “Ocean Hiway” in
Maryland, Virginia, North Caro
lina, South Carolina and Georgia:
the only route so designated by
acts of the legislatures of several
states. The highway surfaces are
better than ever before and the
ferry service is excellent.
“As your president, I will call
within the next few weeks a
meeting of the Executive Com
mittee to firm up plans for the
season ahead. At this meeting.
\acting for the membership under
Authority given them between an
nual meetings, the Executive
Committee will designate a suc
cessor to Captain Garrison as
chairman of the board. Follow
ing the meeting a report to the
membership will be sent you by
our capable secretary-treasurer
Bill Schwartz.
“As members you should know
that already I have visited more
t.ian 85 members in four states,
and I intend to call on each of
you personally during my term of
office as your president. I want
to get your ideas and suggestions
to answer your questions and tc
try to share with each of you my
appreciation for the value of the
Ocean Hiway and my enthusiasm
for its future.
“I hope that when the 1958-59
Ocean Hiway season ends, its pro
gram and results will reflect the
faith Captain Garrison had in it,
and that I have, too. I’m count
ing on you to help make this true
It’s your association, remember
I’ll need and count on your coop
eration and active work, includ
ing getting new members.”
