In the plan presented by Lon nie Thompson, SCS engineer, the Federal government will pay 66 ’'2 per cent of the cost of 7.4 milgs of channel and landowners will furnish 33 M> per cent. Estimated cost of right-of-ways, clearing, and digging the channel was $24,- 831. Federal funds offered for the project were $14,847, leaving $9,- 984 for landowners. Landowners accepted this offer with only one person against it. The Folly Ditch Watershed is 3,000 acres in size. Total cost of improvements is $49,612 including the drainage and land treatment.; For drainage, the cost per acre is $3. This is the farmers’ share of the channel construction. Chowan County landowners can use P.L. 566 to get our ma ; n streams cleaned out. It will help us to develop our natural resourc es. There are several places in the county where an adequate outlet for drainage cannot be ob tained now. All of our streams are choked with silt, logs, trees and debris and after a rain the streams are muddy and overflow ing. You, the landowner, can do| something about it. What are you! going to do about, it? This small watershed act (P.L. 566) provides assistance to local organizations only. It is not a Federal project with local assistance . . . it is a local project with Federal assist ance. This means that local peo ple must start the project and then ask for Federal help.
