seen in almost every human en
deavor. In sermons, brevity
stimulates thought and tempts the
mind to “run on”, encouraging a
mental “Do It Yourself” exercise.
Because we will not be brief we
pursue many things to needless
excess. We waste time, energy
and sleep, over-doing, re-telling,
re-thinking, re-living experiences
which are past and best forgotten.
Excesses in the work we do, the
play we play, the way we eat, yes
and even the community-service
excesses we perform, can be
harmful. Many a fine citizen has

grown “stale” and indifferent, be
cause of these excesses. Brevity
in speech, in work, in play and
even in service, will make us
more effective, more alive, more
zestful, in everything we do.
A democratic form of govern

the average of its voters.
One of these days people will
not work so long for the money
with which to buy the necessary
things of life.

JUSTICE In economic life
International Sunday School
Lesson fcrr September 14, 1958.
Memory Selection: “He who is
faithful in a very little is faith
ful also in much; and he who is
dishonest in a very little is dis
honest also in much.”
—(Luke 16:10).
Lesson Text: Exodus 20:15; Le
viticus 25:35-38; Deuteronomy
25:13-16; Proverbs 11:1; Amos
8:4-8; Luke 19:1-10; James 5:1-
8; I Peter 4:7-11.
This lesson stresses the Chris
tian importance of just dealings
in economic relationships. This
furthers our aim to show that a
Christian must express justice in
every type of daily relationship
with others if be expects his life
to be a symbol of the ideals of
Christ.
In studying our Bible, we find
that the writers of the Old Testa
ment were deeply concerned with
the application of justice to all
dealings that men had with each
other. Today, in our economic
life, we need to be no less con
cerned with justice in these deal
ings, one with the other. Too of
ten, in the vastness of economics,
we stoop to practices that we
would not stoop to in our deal
ings in the community with peo
ple we know. Too often, the
salesmen will pad his expense ac
count, or, as it is popularly known

his “swindle sheet.” Too often
the farmer, who would not dream
of giving short weight in the sale
of his products to a neighbor, will
think nothing of getting as much
as possible from the “soil bank”
or other farm subsidy program for
land which he had no intention
of planting in the first place. This
is contrary to the concept of jus
tice in economic life.
Sometimes, it is true, the rights
of the individual are sometimes
secondary to the need for the ef
ficiency of the larger group. Pol
icies must be administered with
an eye to the overall picture
without consideration for individ
ual differences or hardships. Man
ufacturing plants are moved to
new communities, leaving former
employees behind without em
ployment. Assembly lines in in
dustry are shut down on the ba
sis of economic factors that do not
give consideration to the needs
of the individual situation. These
and many more examples like
them, are unfortunate instances —
necessary evils —of our great eco
nomic structure. We cannot do
much about this sort of thing.
We can, however, as Christians,
do a lot about our personal in
tegrity in our economic life. The
auto repairman can refrain from
selling new parts, in order to ob
tain commission, when old parts
can be worked on to give ade
quate performance. The sales
man can turn in only honest and
justified expenses on his expense
