THE JUDGE’S RACE
By JOHN D. McCREADY
“What a name for a Jumbo of I
a man HASTY. Why he could j
not be hasty in leaving a burning
building. He couldn’t run down
hill!"
So some people might have said
when they first saw the ponder
ous probate judge walking along
'Main Street in his home commun
ity, his huge form swaying from
side to side as he warmly greeted
all he met. But if any one
thought Judge Hasty’s size inter
fered where politics was concern
ed, he was greatly mistaken.
For a generation, he had been
elected to the political office he
desired. He seemed to know hu
man nature and politics as he
knew the palm of his hand. His
philosophy as a candidate was of
ten quoted: “During the cam
paign, whip your opponent to a
frazzle. Then, when it’s over, be
his friend.”
Now, mellowing with age, he
was running once more.
But he had strong opposition.
The rival candidate, young and
attractive, was trying to convince
the voters it was time for a
change, and that they needed a
younger man in the office. How
would the Judge meet his plausi
ble arguments? The veteran poli
tician had a fine record of ser
vice, and many acts of kindness
to his credit as his sending
scores of young people through
college. But would he win now?
The old-timers were still confi
dent. “You wait and see,” they
-said; “Judge Hasty could put that
young candidate in his vest poc
ket.”
Two weeks before the election
the town was suddenly agog with
news that a circus was coming.
Youngsters could talk of nothing

but clowns and acrobats, lions and
elephants. Every boy and girl
planned how to get the neces
sary dollar. But in some families,
where the children were numer
ous, the chances for them all to
see - the show were slim.
The day before the circus, ex
citement at the school rose hour
ly. When chapel exercises were
conducted, the principal announc
ed that the pupils would be dis
missed at noon next day in order
that they might attend the after
noon show. Hundreds of faces
beamed at the announcement, but
some faces were suddenly sad.
Then the principal introduced
“a visitor who has a brief word
for us.” It was Judge Hasty.
The huge man looked over the
crowd, his broad face covered
with a smile that bespoke a genu
ine love of humanity.
“Boys and girls,” he said, “I’m
not here to make a speech. I just
want to ask you a question:
“How many of you would like
to go to the circus tomorrow?”
A forest of hands shot up.
“All right,” he continued, “I
want all of you to go as my
guests. I have talked with the
manager of the show and he will
let you all in free tomorrow af
ternoon. Go home and tell your
parents. I wilt be at the circus
myself and I want to see every
one of you.” He stepped down
from the platform and left the
building amidst a torrent of ap
plause.
That night five hundred young
sters took home the great news
and a host of boys and girls told
their parents whom they must
vote for in the coming election.

opposition candidate walked into
'an office in the court-house mark
ed “Probate Judge”. An enor
mous man rose from a well-worn
chair and greeted him warmly.
“Judge,” said the youthful visit
or, “put me in your vest pocket.”
“Son,” replied the veteran poli
tician, “I’ll put you in the pocket
fight next to my heart.”

holy” (I Peter 1:15, 16) will be
included in the Bible readings.
From “Science and Health with
Key to the Scriptures” by Mary
Baker Eddy the following will be
read (7:16-17, 22-25):
“When will' Jesus’ professdd
followers learn to emulate him in
all his ways and to imitate his
mighty works? ... It is possible—
yea, it is the duty and privilege
of every child, man, and woman
—to follow / some degree the
example of the Master by the
demonstration of Truth and Life,
of health and holiness.”

Automotive project, a part of the

has accomplished a great deal in
improving safety in the county.
With the help of automobile
dealers, service stations, highway
patrol and other civic leaders; in
teresting ’ programs have been
held for project members, one of'
which was a “highway hazard
hunt.”
As a result, there are signs of
many improvements in the coun
ty such as repairs on broken
pavement, overcoming hidden
curves by chopping down obstruc-
tive foliage, putting up signs in
needed places. Mowing the
shoulders of the roads has also
improved the beauty of the road
