It is generally conceded , that Gutenberg invented printing I with movable type, but Martin says that printing came into be- I ing in Korea in the 15th century, j Later, Gutenberg, independently ! invented the same process. Gu- I tenberg’s greatest bit of printing was the Gutenberg Bible. Mar tin also let drop the fact that America uses 4 million tons of newsprint a year. Quite a stack : of Chowan Heralds could be i printed with that much paper. I : PERSONAL—I have been called | a lot of things in my time, but | when this fellow called me a i ! character, I didn’t know whether : to take it as an insult or a com- ■ pliment. I' i OBSERVATION Typographical! said Mr. Byrum. “This moans a saving of 15% over what you would have to pay for the same ! coverage if you bought it indivi dually.” Until the Chowan County jFarm Bureau group was organ ized, rural people were enrolled with the Hospital Care Associa tion only on a direct, individual! basis. Since the Farm Bureau’s group with Hospital Care was established, many local farm families have joined. The family I certificate offered in the current I enrollment provides hospital and surgical protection, including maternity coverage, j The Blue Cross Plan is fully approved by the Chowan Hospi tal and other hospitals through out the statp. Blue Cross is the .only hospital service plan offici ally approved by hospitals. ! Only farm families who belong errors are the bane of all proof readers, including myself. They become an obsession, a passion, an elusive, evasive will-o’-the wisp. And some errors are so obvious, it causes one to question, at times, his own sanity. P. S. OBSERVATION—II’s la ter than you think. It is now al most November, and the year is slipping away, and before we know it Christmas will be upon us. Magazines and newspapers are already beginning to run Christmas advertisements, and stores in their displays are put ting on the old familiar Santa Claus routine. And I am not be ing facetious when I say: Have you done your Christos shop-, ping yet? You can’t trust Russia. to the Chowan Farm Bureau are j I eligible to enroll in the Blue! I Cross plan. C.j Corn Referendum Scheduled Nov. 25; I i Farmers Are Urged to Consider Choices to Be Decided A special corn referendum j will be held in the 32 commer- Icial corn counties in North Caro lina November 25. According to • Zeno O. Ratcliff, Jr., chairman ■| of the ASC State Committee,, , 1 corn farmers should study the j issues at stake in the referen : bum in order that they will he I fully aware of the importance of their vote. I The result of this November 25 referendum to be held among corn growers will determine the kind of program under which all corn producers will operate in 1959 and subsequent years For this reason it is necessary that corn farmers obtain all in formal ion they can on how the various choices available to them will affect their own farming operations. In general the choice is be- 5 ! tween a corn program similar to I that in effect in 1958 in com 'mercial corn counties and which ! would provide support at be- j I ween 75 and 90% of parity; and | 1 a program which would elimin- j ale acreage allotments, which | would pKOvide support at a j minimum of 65% of parity and i .'would do away with designs-j j lion of commercial com coun ! | SELL YOUR HOGS TO j M. Under the new program the level of price support would be 90% of the average corn i price received by farmers dur ing the three preceding years, j The 65% minimum would apply, i however, there is no maximum 'under this plan. | Based on estimated prices i that would prevail in 1959, Rat cliff said that the present corn program would provide sup port at approximately 12 cents i per bushel higher with allot ments than the new program j with no limitation on acreage and no designated commercial area. ! Each mutvicuai corn farmer should take a good look at those [ choices which will be available to him in the November 25 ret iercndum and should study how both of these choices would af fect their own farming opera tion. Ratcliff says that it is imperative that farmers study these two choices and let their, vote on the 25th reflect a choice I which is based on a thOrOugn j study of the program.
