Large Supply New Grapes Available To Plant This Year Estimated 50,000 Cut tings of New Dearing Variety of Muscadine Grape Ready An estimated 50,000 cuttings of the newly-deveolped Dearing va riety of muscadine grape wil) be available for planting this sea son. According to Dr. C. F. Williams, horticultural scientist for the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station. Dearing is, by far, the best per fect-flowered muscadine grape ever developed. In tests at Ra leigh, it yielded 25 per cent more than any other perfect-flowered variety. Dearing was first released last year. However, only 15-20,000 cuttings were available and the supply was quickly sold. No non-yielding male vines are needed to pollinate Dearing. It pollinates itself and s’ets fruits satisfactorily when planted alone. Prior to development of perfect flowered varieties, growers had to set one male vine for every eight female vines to assure a good set 1 of fruit. The fruit of the new Dearing variety is translucent green in color and about the size of Thom as. The flavor is much better than that of other perfect-flower ed varieties available today. Al so, Dearing is more resistant to black rot leaf spot. It ripens in late midseason. Chief faults of Dearing have been its small berry size and ra ther firm texture. These are off set, however, by the high yield and fine flavor. The Dearing was developed at the Coastal Plain Research Sta tion at Willard. It was deveolped and named after the long-time su perintendent of the station, Dr. Charles Dearing. DEFINITION Women are attractive at 20, attentive at 30, adhesive at 40. Air Scoop, Miami, Fla.
