Dedication Service
At Methodist Church
Honoring 1 Dr. Wisely
The Edenton Methodist Church
will hold a service of dedication
of a memorial to the late Dr
Martin Wisely at 11 o’clock
Sunday morning. January 25.
Shortly after the death of Dr.
Wisely the Wesleyan Service-
Guild of the church decided to
erect a memorial to him. This
group has presented to the
church for this purpose a beau
tiful. solid walnut baptismal
font. The font was built by
: Hubert Williford.
The Rev. Earl Richardson re
ports receipt of a letter from
J. R. Wisely, brother of Dr.
Wisely, saying that several of
the Wisely family will be on
hand for the service of dedica
tion. including Mrs. W. L. Wise
ly. Dr. Wisely’s mother.
The Edenton Methodist Church
extends a cordial invitation to
those who loved Dr. Wisely to
attend his special service in
tribute to him.

At PTA Meeting
Tuesday night members of the
Edenton Elementary School Par
ent-Teacher Association held
their first meeting for 1959 in
the auditorium of the Element
ary School. President Thomas
Byrum called the meeting to
order and the presentation of
colors, was made by Girl Scout
Brownie Troop No. 1, under the
direction of their leaders, Mrs.
W. D. Billings and Mrs. W. E.
Jordan. This was followed by
the devotional reading from
Psalms by the Rev. Earl Rich
ardson, pastor of the Edenton
Methodist Church. He also led
the group singing “America,” ac
companied by Mrs. J. J. Ross at
the piano. Mis. Elton Forehand,
Jr., secretary, read the minutes
of the last PTA meeting and the
treasurer’s report was made by
Mrs. David Holton.
Mr. Byrum made a report on
the Elementary School PTA’s
participation in the preparation
of a float for the Christmas pa
rade and announced also that he
has procured and purchased an
“Attendance Banner” which \yill
ir the future be presented fol
lowing each meeting to the
home room having the largest
representation of parents in
attendance. It was later an
nounced that Miss Ruby Felts’
second grade won the attend
ance prize for Tuesday night’s
meeting.
President Byrum appointed a
nominating committee which
will select a slate of officers
for the coming year. The nom
inations will be presented to
the members for a vote at a fu
ture meeting. Those on the
nominating committee are Mrs.
Thomas Cross, Jr., Mrs. Jasper
Hassell, Richard Dixon and

Following appointment of this
committee, Mr. Byruin reported
on two recommendations made
by the Executive Committee of
tne association. The first was
a recommendation that the Ele
mentary School PTA plan a May
Day festival in cooperation with
the Junior-Senior High School
PTA, which recommendation was
put into motion, seconded and
carried by the unanimous vote
of those present. Also carried
by a unanimous vote was the
other recommendation of. the
Executive Committee that the
PTA accept the generous loan
from the Edenton Lions Club of
a visual screening aid machine
with the understanding that the
visual screening be conducted
by trained members of the PTA
and the results of such screen
ing be reported in letters writ
ten and mailed by the PTA to
parents of Elementary School
children in need of visual aid.
Having disposed of all busi
ness, Mr. Byrum turned the
meeting over to the speaker of
the evening, John W. Graham,
president of the Edenton Cham
ber of Commerce, who made a
report on the Chamber’s efforts
in behalf of the community in
the past and its plans for the
immediate future, stressing in
particular the interdependence
of good schools and growing in-

fine talk was much applauded
by the audience and Mr. Byrum
adjourned the meeting with the
announcement that the PTA will
next meet on March 8.

Weds Harry Rountree
The marriage of Miss Martha
Elizabeth McClenney to Harry L.
Rountree took place on Satur
day afternoon, December 27, at 2
o’clock in the Manteo Baptist
Church Manteo, N. C.
The bride is- the daughter of
Mrs. William Thomas McClenney
and the late Mr. McClenney of
Edenton. The bridegroom is the
son of J. Walter Rountree and the
late Mrs. Rountree of Sunbury.
The ceremony was solemnized
by the Rev. W. C. Cholerton, pas
tor of the church.
The bride and bridegroom en
tered the church together. The
bride wore a blue monotone nub
wool suit fitted at the waist with
i row of buttons dividing the
bloused back. Her jacket was
treated with a peplum and fea
tured an autumn haze mink col
lar. Her hat was white felt em
broidered in pearls and draped
with white veil.
