those sentenced for commission
of misdemeanors, and not the
more serious crimes of felonies.
To date, actually few prison
ers have been committed by
judges to prison under the work
release law. The major expla
nation is that offenders who
qualify are likely to be placed
on probation.
How soon after sentencing
is one sent to the central prison
in Raleigh?
Within five days after the ad
journment of the court at which
he was sentenced, if no appeal
has been taken.
After being processed through
the receiving center at the cen-1
tral prison in Raleigh, he may
then be sent to one of the 86
field units or 8 prison institutions
of the North Carolina Prison
System distributed throughout
the State. Only about 8 per cent
of the total prison population is
kept in Raleigh.
Who makes the rules and reg
ulations governing prisoners un
der the control of the State Pris
on System?
They are proposed by the Di
rector of Prisons and become ef
fective when approved by the j
State Prison Commission.
Surprise
The teen-aged girl, after two
lessons from the driving school,
took her father out for a spin in
the family car. “Oh, daddy!”
she shrilled. “Doesn’t speeding
over hill and dale make you glad i
you’re blive?”
“Glad? I’m amazed.”
