PAGE FOUR I—SECTION OHS The Chowan Herald Published every Thursday by The Chowan Herald, a partnership consisting of J. Edwin fiufflap and Hector Lupton, at 423-425 South Broad Street, Edenton. North Carolina. J. EDWIN BUFFLAP Editor HBUTOR LUPTON Advertising Manager SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year (outside North Carolina) One Year (in North Carolina) $2 50 Six Months - -• Entered as second-class matter August 30,1934, at the Post Office at Edenton. North Carolina, under the act of March 3. 1879. Cards of thanks, obituaries, resolutions of re spect, etc., will be charged for at regular ad vertising rates. THURSDAY. APRIL 23, 1959. Be X-rayed! The mass chest X-ray survey went into opera- ! tion in Edenton Wednesday and will be operated today (Thursday) April 24, 25, 28, 29, 30 and ■ May 1 and 2. This is a service which everybody above 15 , years of age should take advantage of. It ;s j the first time in five years that a mass chest X ray program has been carried out in Edenton and Chowan County, and it is hoped at least 4,000 peo ple will take advantage of this opportunity. The X-ray is free. It is not necessary to un dress and requires only about two minutes of j one’s time. There should be nobody who is not willing to sacrifice two minutes of their time in order to learn if they are threatened with a vici ous disease. Those who know say tuberculosis incidence is higher in older people so that it is very import ant that older people be X-rayed while the unit is in Edenton. Often the X-ray detects not only tuberculosis, but other conditions are found which by early treatment can prevent more seri ous trouble. The X-ray unit is located in front of the Betty Shoppe on Broad Street and is in operation each day from 11 A. M., to 5 P. M. Everybody is urged to visit the unit to be X rayed. A report will be mailed to all whose X-ray is positive, so that proper precautions can be taken. This is a very worthwhile service which nobody should pass up. Better Than Nothing Unless estimates of construction are too high, Edenton will at long last have a municipal building which will more adequately serve the needs and the firemen will also have room enough to house their equipment and obviously become even more efficient in their duties. There is some opposition to adding to and renovating the present building at the foot of Broad Street, but to construct a new building would involve a great deal more money. The matter of a municipal building is not new. It has been considered for a number of years and when at various times the estimated cost was presented, that was the end of a new municipal building. Now a certain amount of money is available from the Electric & Water Department, which it is hoped is enough to complete the building and, when completed, should not onily be ade quate but be a credit to the town. Town Coun eilmen, like some critics, would rather see an entirely new building, but past experience bears out the supposition that if nothing is done now. an adequate municipal building will again be a dormant issue for a long time to come. Bids for the work will be opened Thursday afternoon, April 30, at 2 o'clock, and it is hoped the figure will not be so high that it will throw a monkey wrench in the whole works. To have what appears to be an attractive and convenient municipal building now is better than waiting for no telling how long before anything is done toward erecting an entirely new building. County taxes must be paid before Monday, May 4 and town taxes before Monday, May 11, to prevent advertising. Sheriff Earl Goodwin says he’ll remain in his office Saturday afternoon, April 25, and May 2, in order to collect taxes be fore the delinquent list is turned over to the print ers. The Sheriff is giving up the two- Saturday afternoons to accommodate taxpayers, so that some of ’em ought to see him. - • o At last week’s meeting of the Degree of Poca hontas, two members from Merry Hill served re freshments which included pecan pie. Leroy Har rell. wailing for his wife to leave the meeting, was invited to the hall to join in the refreshments. “Have a piece of delicious pie? - ’ I asked him. Just one word, “nope” was .his answer. “You don’t know what you are missing,” I told him. “Oh, yes, I do,” said Leroy, “I’m missing just about two pounds of weight.” o Band Director Derwood Bray had the program at last week’s Rotary meeting, when he exhibited and explained various instruments used by band members, of whom he is justly proud. One of Rotarians asked Tick Elliott what he played when he was going to school. “Nothing,” said Tick, “except plain hell.” Anyway Derwood didn’t get through with his program and it will be continued at today’s Rotary meeting. o At Thursday’s meeting of the Methodist Men’s Club the matter of finances came in for a share of the discussion. J. R. DuLaney, church treas urer, had church contributions broken down, which showed that quite a few people haven’t paid anything this year. Which brought the re mark from one of the members. “Have you checked on income reports?” - o Red Men have been very busy painting and fix ing up their hall. The job was given to a com mittee and it was while the color to be used was being considered one fellow piped up “I am in favor of any color, just so it’s white.” Anyway, the color is light green and look’s very good. Le roy Harrell, sachem, urges some of the members to come to a meeting even if it is only to see how the hall looks. o Harry and Martha Grummey came over from Washington to spend the week-end and, of course, tried their luck at fishing. They didn’t do so hot (they’re furriners now). Anyway, Martha got all het up while baiting a hook. This darned (I think that was the word) worm crawls off twice as fast as I put it on.” o A number of Edenton people went to Cherry Point over last week-end to witness “Semper Fi,” a musical comedy presented at the Marine Corps j Air Station. Mrs. Joon Gay Aynes, a former Edentonian, wrote the play, so that Edenton friends were very much elated over the success j of the affair, which they report was “very good.” Frank Roberts, who went to Pottsville, Pa., about a year ago, has come back to Edenton to be associated as program director of radio station WCDJ. Frank had this to say upon his return: "I don’t think any words I write, or anything I say to anyone, could adequately describe the warm feelings I have for this community. I’ve never, in all my life, been so pleasantly greeted by so many good friends. Folks have taken the time and trouble to call me while I was on the air; some people have stopped me on the street, to say 'welcome back'. It’s just the kind of good feeling that is so typical ot Edenton. Edenton ... a towr i I’d love to call my own. Certainly no towfn north of the Mason-Dixon line can even come close .to comparing with Edenton, not only in friendliness and warmth and good feelings, but in beauty and pride. So be lieve me when I say it’s a great kick to once again be working with Dick Schuman and the entire staff of WCDJ; to be able to live and work and play in Edenton . . . to be amongst the people I love so very much.” Extension Specialist Federation Speaker Continued from Page 1. Section 1 derived from the effort. She al so stressed the importance of studying the subject thoroughly and doing the best quality work possible on the craft in order to have outstanding results. One especially inspiring example she mentioned was of a woman who started woodcarving only a year ago, whose articles are already in demand at rewarding prices. From the three graceful geese she showed to the group, it was easy to see that the woman had really studied her craft, selected the wood for the extra effect the , grain would give in the finished product, and taken great care in the entire process. Miss Gordon’s display of a braided rug in muted shades of greens, yellows and browns be side material woven for draper ies in stripes of contrasting col ors, together with accessories of woodcarvings, framed bronzed metalcraft etchings, and a dried flower arrangement created a beautifully coordinated effect which can be achieved only by careful planning of the use of , crafts in the home. Decision Reached For , Municipal Building Continued from Page I—Section 1 Edenton has been considered at intervals over a long period of time. Town employees are han dicapped due to cramped quar ters and the Fire Department for a long time has been unable to even house all of the trucks, not to mention lack of ample room for other activities. After seriously considering the plans and specifications, Town Councilmen are of the opinion that, despite some objection, when the building is completed it will not only be attractive, but will also be a credit to the town. Edenton Prepares To Greet Visitors Continued from Page I—-Section 1 P. Kehayes, County Commission er Chairman W. E. Bond, Cham ber of Commerce President John W. Graham, Grayson Harding, chairman of the board and Er nest Ward, Jr., president, Ocean Hiway Association, Mrs. Inglis Fletcher, famous author, and Mrs. Goldie Niblett, local AAA representative are among those 1 who will greet the guests. The party’s motorcade will bp met by local Police Department at the U. S. Highway 17 bridge at 3:15 P. M., and escorted to the hotel. Refreshments will be ser ved through the courtesy of the Edenton Restaurant and the Peoples Bank and Trust Com pany, with colonial costumed members of the Woman’s Club serving as hostesses. “Penelope Barker” tea will be featured. At 3:45 the group will inspect the Chowan County Court House and other historic spots in the vicinity, after which they will be conducted on a brief tour of the town. The party is scheduled to leave here at 4:15 for Elizabeth . City and a tour of the Outer Banks, Morehead City and Try on Palace before returning to Ra leigh at the week-end.
