Each is elected by the voters of North Carolina for a term of eight years. All of the members are not elected into office at the same time. The expiration dates of the eight-year terms ar stag gered. In the event of a vacancy, the Governor appoints a person to fill the vacancy until the next general election. Who are the present members of the Supreme Court of North Carolina? The Chief Justice is J. Wallace Winborne. The Associate Jus tices are: Emery B. Denny, Clif ton L. Moore, R. Hunt Parker, William H. Bobbitt, Carlisle W. Higgins, and William B. Rodman, Jr. What member of the present Supreme Court has served the longest period of time as a mem ber of that tribunal? Chief Justice J. Wallace Win borne. He has been a member of the Supreme Court since July 1, 1937. How is the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court selected? He is elected to the position by the voters of North Carolina. In the event of a vacancy, the Gov ernor appoints a person to fill the vancy until the next general election. Since there are no testifying witnesses in the Supreme Court, no cross-examining of them, and no jurors, the whole atmosphere of the Supreme Court is decided ly different from that of a ses sion of the Superior Court. The lawyers themselves do not rave and rant, or enter into flights of oratorical eloquence, in making their oral arguments, as they have been known to do before jurors in the Superior Court. The justices have before them not only the printed or mimeo graphed record of the cases im the court below, but also the] printed or mimeographed argu- J ments of the counsel on both] sides. The latter are called the appellate briefs of the counsel. Do the members of the North Carolina Supreme Court wear; robes? j Yes. They wear black judicial; robes while attending the open Sessions of the Court. What is the seating arrange ment of the justices during ses sions of the Court? The Chief Justice sits in the middle. The Associate Justice in point of seniority sits to the im-j mediate right of the Chief Jus-; dice. The Associate Justice nexti in seniority sits to the immediate left of the Chief Justice. The re-1 maining Associate Justices are seated, in order of seniority, in the same manner, alternating from right to left. Incidentally, the Justices do not sit on a bench. They are seated in comfortable chairs. The one on the extreme left of the Chief Justice has the best view of the squirrels, pigeons, and people on Capitol Square. . ... f* m y i .'■•x-. >*v. :V. v. . SENATOR SAM ERVIN I * SAYS » Washington The opposition by some leaders of organized la bor and some management in this country to the Kennedy-Ervin labor reform bill recently passed by the Senate convinces me that the bill should become law. I have been working on this bill for a long time; labor reform legislation is urgently needed and my serve on the McClellan Com mittee has provided an opportun ity for me to determine the need. Hoffa Opposes Teamsters President James Hof fa opposes the bill and is leading a battle to have the legislation killed in the House of Represen tatives. He declares that the Kennedy-Ervin bill is too strin gent. I can understand his op position to it because it would regulate some things ho appar ently does not want regulated. Some businessmen are opposing the bill because they say it is too weak. How thev can recon cile their views with that of Hof fa in opposing the bill I cannot understand. 'xBiCTflR __ eliminate corruption uncovered by the McClellan Committee. Those who oppose the bill on the theory that it is too weak should read the bill carefully and find put what the'bill contains. Traditional View The Kennedy-Ervin bill, as well as all bills of this nature, is opposed by United Mine Work ers President John L. Lewis. He seems to put his opposition on his traditional view that rela tionships between labor and man agement should be left entirely to them and that there should be no interference whatever in the form of legislation in this field. He seems to feel that local and state laws against embezlement, for example, should be sufficient to handle the problem if the laws are enforced. That view is sound Plagued Day And N ig ht with Bladder Discomfort? We found on the McClellan Commit tee that in many cases local offi cials had not undertaken to en force the laws because, one is led to conclude, of the union’s political power. My view is that the type of op position to the Kennedy-Ervin bill indicates a pattern that de feated the Kennedy-Ives bill last session and that may well defeat effective labor reform legislation now. If some labor leaders and some leaders of management con tinue to oppose the bill there is no way to predict what will be the outcome. Anti-Trust Laws Hoffa’s arrogance in whtft has i been interpreted to be a threat of a nation-wide strike in the event Congress passes certain, legislation has strengthened thei McClellan bill which would put I transportation unions under anti- ! trust laws. | Personally, I have not favored extending' anti-trust laws to un- j ions generally. But as a result! of the attitude manifested by j Hoffa, an attitude I have had an! oooortunitv to witness as a mem ber of the McClellan Senate Rackets Committee, I do t,h : nk that, the time has come when Congress ought to seriously con sider extending the anti-trust laws to unions of a large nature I* • • bee gee • • • LP GAS LOOK AT ALL THE USERS, JOIN THE BIG PARADE, i BE A HAPPY MEMBER OF ; THE BOTTLED GAS e 'OCAI TRADEMARK!. h» The Chowan Cooperative Produce Exchange, Inc. You will recall that it was ne cessary for Congress to enact the anti-trust laws because of the arrogance of big business and the trusts which refused to recognize the rights of society in general and which insisted on creating monopolies in the field of busi ness regardless ‘of the public in terest and regardless of the methods employed to creat such monopolies. I am convinced that the statement attributed to Mr. Hoffa ought to be a self-evident fact to everybody that no man nor set of men can be safely trusted with unlimited power. 108 Get Old Age Assistance In May According to Mrs. J.
