PAGE EIGHT Soybean Growers Will Have •f New Variety For Next Year * North Carolina soybean grow th will have a new variety to Choose from next year. Hill, a new soybean variety for Nbrth Carolina and the South, Ins been released by NSDA and Cooperating state experiment sta tions. Foundation seed of the new Variety is now being increased. The seed supply for next year Should be good, says Dr. Charles A. Brim, a USDA scientist at N. C. State College who worked bn the variety. According to George Spain, Agronomy specialist at State Col lege, the Hill has these charac teristics: Early maturity, high Comparative yields, shatter re- Cistance, resistance to major leaf disease and purple stain, and ex cellent seed quality. Hill is similar in appearance | IStNATOt A 1 SAM ERVIN Washington The so-called “skeleton” civil rights bill re ported by the Senate Constitu tional Rights Subcommittee last Week, although greatly toned down from others that we de feated, is something that must be taken seriously as a threat. It has white instead of purple flowers, and the hilum (eye) of the seed is light brown in color. Seed size of Hill is slightly smaller than Lee. “Hill will give soybean grow ers in Northeast and Tidewater counties a choice of an earlier maturing variety,” Spain says. “It may also spread the harvest season for many other growers.” Variety demonstrations of Hill are now being grown in several Eastern and Northeastern North Carolina counties. There are al so plantings at the Tidewater Research Station, Plymouth. County agricultural agents have additional information on the new variety. manding. No Filibuster The press asked me the other day whether or not I was plan ning a filibuster against civil rights. I am not, but there will be extended discussion of the dangers of any proposed bills just as was done in 1957 when we were able to preserve our RESERVE | SOSO j SO 95 • J FIFTH f j^K [**♦ 9 THE CHOWAN HERALD. As I have •said before, our fight is one of ’ reason and education to inform the Congress and the country what is being proposed in these harsh bills. While I am always concerned about any legislation of this type, I do not feel the Senate is in any mood to re store the old Part 111 of the 1957 fight which we successfully voted down. I have been asked whether or not the action in the Subcom mittee on which I serve was a victory for the South against the harsh civil rights bills. It is not a victory at the moment because i the battle is not yet over; I was| encouraged that we were able to defeat the more radical proposals and to that extent it was a vic tory. Party Chairman The criticism by Chairman Paul Butler of. the Democratic Congressional leadership is total ly unwarranted. Lyndon John son and Mike Mansfield, in the Senate, and Sam Rayburn and John W. McCormack, in the House, are affording the Demo cratic Party highly intelligent leadership and by so doing are rendering a constructive service to both the Democratic Party wy rfwt, Ur. u uv LTu-m-i* Chas. B. Morgan Painting Paper Hanging PHONE 2486 6 Hawthorne Road EDENTON, N. C. 'and the country. Indeed, they 1 are following the traditions of the Democratic Party as mani-l tested in the last platform and* its history. -The Democratic Par ty does not desire that legisla tors elected by its membership dance like puppets on a string pulled by the Rational cjiairman or any other group intolerant of independent thinking. It expects legislators bearing its label to carry their own sovereignty un der their own hats just as those who elected them expect them to do. With this Congressional leadership the Democratic Party ! was victorious in 1958; it would | be unwise to turn over the Par ty lock, stock and barrel to a group, headed by Chairman But ler, who apparently lacks the vision to comprehend the na ture of the Party. Blue Ridge Parkway Most Scenic Highway Travel experts of ihe National Association of Travel Organiza tions have voted the Blue Ridge Parkway the most scenic of all America’s major highways. In Western North Carolina, the Parkway reaches the highest ele vations on its route between the Shenandoah National Pai*k in Virginia and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and meets the Great Smokies Park near Cherokee. Completed sec tions of the Parkway in North Carolina total 180 miles. The Parkway’s choice as “most scenic” resulted from the Na tional Association of Travel Or ganizatiion’s poll of the 125 of its 500 members most interested in highway travel. They includ ed officials of automobile clubs, oil company tour services, motel associations and bus companies, and directors of state and reg ional travel promotional offices. The Blue Ridge Parkway has long been the most popular of all U. S. National Park Service facilities. Its visitation by 2,097,- 562 tourists during the first six months of 1959 is a gain of 14 percent over the same period last year. ' The death sentence is* a se vere penalty to pay for break ing a traffic law. But figures from the State Department of Motor Vehicles show that over three-fourths of all drivers in volved in last year’s fatal acci dents were violating some traf fic law.
