SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON * Confd. from Pag* s—Section 2 j This is not to suggest that just Lfecause an idea is old it is of questionable value, or that bs-| cause an idea is new and dif ferent it more nearly ap-proxi-1 ntotes the truth. There is al ways this danger. I But, it is to suggest that when j the Christian is convinced of the | facts of his faith, then he is I called upon to stand up .and be i counted among those who hold | fast to that faith in the face of unpopular reaction. This lesson is helpful to any of us in the modern day, because it points to the reasonable demand on Chris tian disciples to stand firm for the new and the old in the Christian faith as God h*s re veal ed it, and as be stiß re > veals it to minds and soirits sen sitized to his voice and his will. | Too often we are inclined to | compromise with the more non-1 iflar interpretations of truth, rather than to stay firm in a courageous stand for convictions. Such procedures, among the early Chririiah martvrs, could never hav» establ'shed the Christian Church. Such pro cedures today cannot hope to sustain the organized Church. It isn’t enough for the modern Christian to marvel at the bold ness of Peter and John. It isn’t MAOLA ... The Milk of' - Superlative Quality JH Lt Smk •. * * PICK UP THE HANDY HALF GALLON NOTICE! To each | Christian comes the. demand to j ' stand up and be counted in his 1 corner of the world for the i faith we all share. There may not be the drama cf the court room with all the religious lead ership of the church in rapt at | tention. It may meyely be the ■ simple test at a social gathering when a cocktail is offered and one murmurs a polite refusal. ' Nevertheless, it will be an af j firmation on our part. During a severe persecution of I Christians in Smyrna in A.D. | 155 and its demand for em | peror worship, Bishop Polycaro I was called on to recant his Christian faith and give obeis ance to the Roman emperor. This aged leader of the Chris tians refused to compromise himself or his faith. He was burned at the stake in the mar ket place of his city, as a re sult. His last words are worthy of our attention here. Given one I last chance to renounce his faith lin Christ before the fire was j lighted, Polycarp rep'ied, “For eighty and s : x years have I served him, and he has done me no wrong. How can I now blas pheme h : m who is mv God and my king?” This is the authentic spirit of undaunted Christian witness. And we today are called to join its fellowship.
