CH°w^ News By HARRY VENTERS Assistant County Agent Officers have been elected at the school 4-H Clubs this month, with the exception of the Eden ton Elementary School, which will not meet until after press time this week. Richard White was elected president of the Chowan Sen ior 4-H Club. Richard has been an active 4-H’er for several years. Judy Haste was elected vice president of this club. She is al9o one of the outstanding Chowan County 4-H’ers. Other officers include Joey Asbell, secretary-treasurer; Muriel Bate man, song leader, and Frances Smithson and Jimmy Ward, re porters. The program commit tee consists of Judy Haste, chairman; Roy Nixon, Emmett Jones, Jr., and Christine White. The Chowan Intermediate 4-H Club elected Dennis Hare, presi dent; Sarah Elliott, vice presi dent; Sandra Harrell, secretary treasurer; Elane Hobbs and Lewis Evans, song leaders, and Linda Byrum and Danny Long, reporters. The program com mittee consists of Sarah Elliott, chairman; Joyce Bass, Arlyn Bunch and Gene Harrell. The Chowan Junior 4-H Club has also elected their officers. They are Linda Goodwin, presi dent; Robbie Boyce, vice presi dent; Nancy Bass, secretary treasurer; Glenda Bunch and Donald Bunch, song leaders, and Margaret Tynch and Robert Bulls, reporters. The program committee consists of Robbie Boyce, chairman, Gloria By rum, Belinda Perry and Al Asbell. Officers of the John A. Holmes Senior 4-H and the Edenton! Junior and Intermediate 4-H Clubs will be announced later. | Officers of the 4-H Clubs are automatically members of the 4-H County Council. It is their duty to attend the monthly! County Council meetings and| represent their club. This is perhaps the most important re sponsibility that these boys and girls have asjumed. They are responsible to plan many special activities such as the 4-H Achievement Pro gram which will be coming up soon, 4-H Church Sunday, set 4-H Camp dates, and many oth er things. I hope that the par ents of these boys and girls will cooperate to the extent of seeing that their children have transportation to all County Council meetings. The first County Council meeting will be held tonight (Thursday) at the Chowan Com-! munity Building. County Coun-| cil officers will be elected and i the 4-H Achievement program] must be planned. I .hope that all 4-H officers .will be present to represent their clubs. Robert B. Smith, Jr. Has Been Appointed Census Crew Leader Appointment of Robert B. I Smith, Jr., as a crew leader for | the 1959 census of agriculture, has been announced by Field Director Joseph R. Norwood of the Census Bureau’s regional of fice in Charlotte. Mr. Smith will direct a force of census takers who will can vass all farms in Chowan and Gates counties. Before assum ing his post, he will go to Wil- where he will receive five days 6f training by a mem ber of the Census Bureau’s staff. Topics to be covered include pro cedures or recruiting of census takers, census taker training, canvassing methods, preparatiori and submission of reports and the supervision of census takers to insure a complete and accu rate count.
