Can we dig peace, or wisdom, from the mine? To make our fortune than our happiness. —Young. , “Every citizen who enjoys the protection oj a jree government owes not only a portion oj his property but even oj his person al services to the defense oj it.” —George Washington The above is a quotation of George Washington, our Country's greatest National Guard soldier. The principle he stated is an im mortal principle. Men have lived by it. Men have died for it. This principle is the foundation stone and the bed rock of the National Guard, the oldest by far of the components of the de fense team of the United States. Men who believed in this prin ciple fought with their units in the French and Indian Wars. They fought in the Revolution; the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars in Florida, the Black Hawk War of 1832, the War with Mexico, the War between the States, the Spanish-American War, the Mexican Board, World War I, World War II and Korea. The farmer, the shop keeper, the laborer, the professional man, t'he clerk, citizen soldiers all, fought shoulder to shoulder with the professional soldiers against the best the enemy had to offer, and they never lost a war. The National Guard is justly proud of its her.tage and its history and looks forward to its future with confidence. Its members are in the first line of America's defense team carrying on its great tradition shoulder to shoulder with the best men in their home towns, and in the : r country. MILITARY OBLIGATION Most men seventeen or older are faced with a Military Obliga tion, and if you are able bodied and mentally qualified you can be reasonably sure that you will perform some type of military service. Under the present law you are subject to being drafted until you become 35 years of age. Should you be drafted it would be for a period of two years. The National Guard has an excel lent program that will see a man through his military require ments and under conditions that will be the least likely to inter-, sere with his normal civilian life. If you are between 17 and 13'/2 years of age you can join your local National Guard unit now and arrange to take 6 months of active duty training at a regular Army training center. One not in high school can delay his departure for as long as 120 days after he joins the Guard, while one still in high school may delay his defJhrture a full year. Upon completion of this training you will return home to complete your Ready Reserve service by at tending weekly training drills at your home Guard unit and two weeks of summer training each year. Yoq can still attend school and keep your job while training with the Guard. FinanciaO security can be yours in the National Guard in much the same way as if you were a member of the Regular Army or other military service; and the Guard also offers a retire ment plan at age 60. “Come on out and have a talk with us,” FOR SALE OR RENT jo?e P ° Sal oi valuable commercial or residential building at South Broad Street will be made on or about January 1. building has been in my possession since September 1, “ bas paid expense of purchase and investment since date of purchase and at present rental rale would continue to P*y expense of ownership until present contract of purchase * August 1, 1966.
