4 \U)c News By CATHERINE AMAN Assistant Home Economics Agent The 4-H'Clmb is offering a new project this year entitled “Au tomotive Care and Safety”. This project has been developed as a national program for boys and ‘girls who are at least 15 years of age. It is a three-unit pro ject and may be completed by a member meeting the require ments of one unit. In North Carolina each year 100,000 boys and girls reach driv ing age and aipply for driver’s licenses to operate motor ve hicles. The minimum age for li-l censing is 16 ( years, so most youths at age 15 are preparing f seriously to drive. Fifty-seven of all ■ traffic .accidents in this state in 1958 occurred in fural areas. Fifteen percent of all traffic accidents which oc curred involved boys and girls under 21 years cf age. So we do feel that there is a definite need for this program and it is a real challenge to young peo ple to do everything to improve ■their driving records. , The objectives of the Automo tive Care and Safety Project are to help boys and girls develop: An understanding of the im portance of the motor vehicle on the American way of life. A clear knowledge of highway !afety and proper attitudes of highway courtesy. An understanding of traffic regulations and other laws relat ed to operation and ownership portance of following the laws, of motor vehicles, and the im- An ability to perform elemen tary car maintenance operations ~ such as cleaning and polishing J a car, care of tires- and check-, ing the radiator, battery, etc. 1 A knowledge of the basic parts i of the car and the principles of their maintenance and operatibn. | An understanding of the prin ciples of. force, speed, center of gravity,' etc., applicable to safe motor vehicle operation. j An understanding of the eco-' nomics of efficient purchase and W, - - ■ 1 9 He got all steamed up about the ■ j, better way they do things at yWj ■ Jackson’s Radio-TV Service jj S PHONE 3519 EDENTON You, too, will vform up to the precision ond WM promptitude with which we fix whatever's wrong I|l >. with your TV set, restore perfect reception! |H • FIFTY-FOURTH ANNUAL FINANCIAL STATEMENT AS OF DECEMBER 31st, 1959.
