PAGE SIX .—SECTION TWO Bonner Not Too Optomistic jf ; About President’s Message Representative Herbert C. Ppnner (D-N.C.), commenting on the President’s State of the Union Message, said there were “many splendid points in the statement, but the past record doesn’t give too much assurance that some of his major promises cdn or will come true.” Bonner said, “The President /ants to fight inflation and hold he line on Government ex penditures, but it is a well nown fact that the public debt as approximately doubled since < e and his Administration came nto office. True, the annual mdgets that he has presented 'ear afttr year have not been significantly high in the total mount from previous years. At 'he same time, however, neces ary items have been excluded, with the result that the Demo cratic Congress has been com pelled to appropriate needed ad ditional amounts. Mr. Eisen hower says nothing of the fact that he has the power, without legislation, to eliminate some of the vast waste and inefficiency occurring in many of the au thorized programs. “I—-in fact, all Americans— join with the President in his sincere wishes and efforts for peace.' To achieve this we must also maintain our economic sta bility. “With regard to his comments on agriculture, it is well to re member that the major portion of .the present program is the responsibility of this Admini —Schenleu RESERVE | *OSO /x PINT $095 J FIFTH J® jHchenlei) || ' j . i 1 || IMU nafji* ' R' WMIf KMiflS M., H T,C • IICKOEO WHISKf K ELfCANCE • K PWWf, 65* MAW HtUTRAL SPIRITS v%£' '*T' . i '''■■■*'9**.:'■:? • -• • v. *\ j.: .< . i': stration. He wants to hold the I line on the cost of the agricul tural program, yet our tobacco' program would be in better shape today if the President had not vetoed a bill to stabilize to bacco prices. i “The message deplores our j deficit in the international bal ! ance of payments. Yet this Ad ministration has greatly en couraged the flight cf American capital abroad where goods are manufactured and sold in the United States, as well as abroad, more cheaply than the same products can be produced here. “Much was made of our pro gress in the field of both ap | plied and basic space sciences, with the statement that the 1961 budget will call for 100 percent increase in space expenditures. We certainly need to step up lour activity in this important field. But, in view of the in creasing importance of the oceans in our defense posture, and in many other aspects, it was disappointing that no refer ; ence was made to accelerated re search in the vital field of | oceanography. | “I await with a great deal of f interest the receipt cf the Presi dent’s Budget Message.” 1 Empty Master—Doesn’t that mule ever kick you?
