The .ineriean people, en masse, wiui a very email per centage of exceptiO'-v follow these ratings and opinions like, sheep, very seldom exercising j their native intelligence or ex | pressing criticism of the ratings, i As to the TV ratings, there are [ several concerns that are in the i business of determining the rat lings and sell their findings to [ the various organizations using i these services. There are three 11 or lour well known concerns in I this business and their methods ,of determining the ratings vary, 1 but the principle is the same; j the testing of a certain number 'of people as to what they may I have on their TV screen at a given time. One concern has an attachment on a • certain num- j ber of TV sets with the consent of the owners, of course, that microfilnrs the TV set every, time it is turned on. This mi-] crofilm takes a record of what j .every station is turned on with j the film showing the program on at that time. These films are j collected every so often and a i record made of the film, and 1 the statistics established which i form the basis of the rating. Another concern, with the con sent of owners, have TVs wired to a central office. As soon as a TV set is turned on, this is j flashed to the central office and j indicated on a board with all of J I the stations in the area listed. , 1 This record then is analyzed and ] [ the statistics furnished as to | what is being viewed, and that j ' forms the basis 'of that rating, i Then there is another concern i that each night telephones a certain number of people in a certain number of cities through-! ' out the country. The reports of ) these telephone calls are then tabulated and the rating estab- j lished. There are certain weak- j j nesses to these methods. First, j the number of people tested is very small, not more than five thousand for all of the con cerns, as a basis of forming an opinion as to the likes and dis i • . 5% New Car Loans Peoples Bank and Trust Co. } Consumer Credit Branch 210 South Broad Street EDENTON. N. C. j Member F. D. I. C. | THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11. 1960. 1 likes of fifty million owners of | >TV sets. Then there is the fal-t * lacy Uia* the kket and dislikes j of these five thousand people | jane the same as the rest of th- , j population. It is like saying that* ; Joe Jones, the bather, is looking at a certain program and. there -1 fore, ail of the barbers in the U. S. are looking at the same program. As a result of these I lalse ratings, many good pro grams are taken from the air. There were two excellent pro grams. involving symphonic con certs with' outstanding vocalists, which were on the air at either 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening, once a week. The rating deter -1 mined that these concerts were not pulling and were taken off 1 the a:r. One corporation, which j had furnished this entertain ■ meat for over 39 years, fought th:s decision, but was unable to overcome these ratings and, as a I result, the public was deprived | iof very worthwhile entertain ment. But it is not only in TV i that these ratings are pernicious I in making sheep out of people. It also applies to the book of j the month books, tlie best sellers which people follow as if in a dream without determining the J qualities of books for them selves or following the reports of accepted eriti.s. People just look at the ratings and buy or • read accordingly. No one knows I how the booksellers accomplish j these listings, but they are the I ones who make the reports as j well as the publishers. A book -1 seller will push certain books [ and hide other worthwhile j books Under the counter and ' there are other methods which j j he uses, for he is interested ini i the quantity sola and the prefit. * i As a resuit many a worthwhile* ' book hardly ever sees the day- , j light. It is the same with reo- I lords.I ords. vide, the payola. Reports! jare received from the disc jock- j eys and from other sources, such j as juke boxes and these deter-1 mine the quality of the music i, which the public buys. It coy- i ers e\ ery field of promotion and ], j advertising and the people are ’ j eing deprived of exercising j j heir own intelligence for they i i must follow the ratings. One j i newspaper reporter, accompany- j i tng President Eisenhower on his i recent trip, interviewed a certain ! oreign diplomat and asked him j •vhat he thought of the Ameri- I can people. This diplomat hem- j med and hawed and tried to ) avoid the question but' finally as diplomatically as he could he ! raid: “The American people are very naive, very gullible and most generous.’’ He could not be persuaded to expand on his opinion. As long as the people do not express themselves in the j form of criticism, are willing to follow the opinions of others and not express their own feel- ; mgs, they will continue to be j naive, gullible and be generous in spending their money on less than worthwhile things. Dear Three P’s: . My older sister is going jaiound with a divorced man and lit looks as though he is going! ito propose marriage. In my ! opinion, my sister is a wonder ful-person and I would not want 1 ] her to waste her life on a man 1 who has already failed. What can I do about it. —Judy, j Dear Judy: It might be well for you to find out all of the facts in re gard to this divorced man. He must have some qualities that rttract your sister, or she would! not waste her time with him. j When you consider that one out| of every five marriages ends up | in divorce, you are condemning! | a great many men and women! j because of such divorces. There ‘are many causes for divorce, I and. in many cases, the divorce may have been the best solution jto incompatibility and unhappi | ness. Because, people may have .failed in their first attempt is ] no reason to condemn them for | ever. Look further into this. ( man's character and you may!
