I—SECTION TWO PAGE FOUR { > SENATOR JORDAN REPORTS HBUS Fraa.WASIINfiTOH [1 Washington Congress has, Kent to the President a bill that! IwouLd increase the Federal ■Brants to municipalities for the of sewage disposal (projects. |r The measure, known as the (Blajnik Bill, would increase 1 ■from SSO million to S9O million ■the amount of grants made each »ear by the Federal government (to cities and towns toward the (cost of building sewage disposal ■projects. I In the past, the Administra- Ition has-strongly opposed an ex pansion in this program 1 have ■Wired the President urging him (to sign the bill into law be- Icause of the urgent need of kiany communities to correct (serious water pollution prob llems. f This program has meant a I great deal to North Carolina. Ilhe Federal government started' I making grants under the pro- Igram in 1956. Since that time.! la total of 47 projects in North; I Carolina have been completed' 1 3t are now under way. The j I total eoust of these projects limounts to over $22.5 million, I [ind the Federal government's I ‘Jure of this total is slightly [over $5 million. From these [,'igures, it is obvious that the [Federal government’s program of; (grants for this purpose has en. [Nmraged the construction of a ’ fjnat many badly needed water |x>llutiuilt without the assistance of [Jie Federal government. [ More revealing than the above Figures is the fact that we in Vorth Carolina now have a to ad of 46 proposed projects in he pipeline, or on the waiting ist, for approval of Federal 'rants. These projects wll cost total of about $33.5 million. Jclow is a list of the cities and owns which are waiting for unds under the program:, ! Ahoskie, Asheboro. Bessemer iity, Canton. Even with the nroposed in-, rcases in the program, it would' ; LAB£{, <1 # %n®s? f . i , £^v :^yS r I , take from roc© taiw years t© ! begin construction on alt ©? the ; presently-planned projects in North Carolina for which grants have already bee© sought. This ■ means that it is of utswost inv . portanee to have an expended j program in order to keep up. Bv the time this ooinimn its ! published, it may well he that the President has made his dc ! cisimi about either stgumtus; the j bill into law or vetoing it. If | lie signs it, all well and gaud. ;1 f he Woes it, I ant fatpehtl that we will he able to twtster enough votes in Congress to override his veto. No such restriction is at pres ent placed on the widows or children of deceased World War I veterans. j The new pension law, going into effect July 1, 1960, removes this restriction and places wi- > dows and children of World j War II and the Korean conflict! on the same basis as World < War I dependents in this re gard, the VA said. This ‘equalization clause” of the new pension system is ex pected to add approximately 200,000 widow's and orphans to the pension rolls, the VA esti mates.
