Bells At Si. Ann's
Will Again Ring
The bells of St. Ann's Catholic
Church will ring for the first
time in several years Easter
morning.
The church has just had in-,
stalled a Verin electric bell j
ringer to operate the 400-pound •
bell. The new system of opera
tion will eliminate vibrations in
the more than 100-year-old'
building.
' The automatic bell ringer has
been made possible through var
ious contributions.
Church bells are sounded to
remind people of religion and
of God. The bell, in addition!
to Sunday masses, will ring the 1
Anglus morning, noon and even
ing. The Anglus is rung as a
reminder of the birth and nesuc
rection of Christ, that all who
hear may stop their activities;
and pray.
The history of the Anglus goes’
back to the I4th century, when
it was rung to pray forthe 1
preservation of peace and since
that time has become known
! as the “peace bell.”
; The restoration of the belli
i completes a program of repairs
land improvements, that was bo-
I gun when Father Smith was the
I rector of St. Ann’s. In addition :
to general repairs a parish hall
! has been built in the basement
of the church, a new heating
I system has been installed and,
the church building redecorated 1
I and re-inforced.
