Contract Awarded
For Inlet Dredging
The State Highway Depart- ’
ment last week announced a'
contract for dredging the Ora-1
gon Inlet channel had been!
awarded to the Cottrell Contract- 1
ing Corporation of Norfolk fbr
$26,400. An eairlier bid of $84,000
was rejected by the State High
way Commission at its April Ist
meeting in Raleigh and the Com
mission directed the re-adver
tisement of the project immedi
-1 ately.
Dredging is necessary to deep
en the ferry boat channel be
tween Nags Head and Hatteras
Island.. During the winter,' ferry
schedules were interrupted fre
quently by shifting shoals fol
lowing a series of northeasterly
storms.
Although the ferry boat ser
vice has recently been operating
on an almost normal schedule,
the dredging was necessary to
insure ■unintenrup'ted ferry boat
service.
The Highway Commission has |
already approved construction ofi
a bridge to span Oregon Inlet I
and location survey crews arei
now in the area to determine i
possible bridge sites.

I Aces Lose Tliriller
j TO Hertford 1 To 0
By BILL GOODWIN
Carroll Forehand became the|
'second Edenton Ace*' pilcher to (
drop a tight mound duel to Pete
Hunter as the Perquimans -In-1
dians downed the Aces 1-0 in an
' Albemarle Conference baseball,
game played on Hicks Field |
Tuesday afternoon.
Forehand, (backed by stout de
fensive play by the Aces, gave j
up three hits, one of which was
a double by Billy Nixon in the
second inning. That hit, coupled
with Zackie Harrell’s wild throw
over first base, provided the
game-winning run. ,
| ■ Equally brilliant was Hunter’s
three-hit performance. He was
in trouble only twice, both times
'on almost identical plays, but he
bore down to strike out the
third mhn. ,
Nixon’s blow in the second
was a towering drive oyer Joe
Mitchener’s head in left field.
Nixon scored on the next play |
when Harrell picked up Freddie
Colson's slow roller at third and
sent it sailing over Wayne Bak
er’s head at first.
Edenton threatened ip the
third apd fifth frames. In the
third Jimmy Dail singled to
center with two out. Hunter
walked Dickie Cobb and struck.
out Forehand. The same thing
happened in the fifth as Dail
got to first on an error by
third baseman Fowler. Cobb
walked and Huhter again struck
out Forehand to retire the side. ]
Harrell and Baker had the j
only other hits by the Aces.
[ Harrell singled to center in the
fifth, and Baker beat out an in
field hit in. the fourth. Hunter
! singled far Perquimans in the
[third, but he was retired in a
l double play. Chappell singled i
to left in the seventh for the
other Indian hit.
Forehand struck out five and
walked one. Hunter fanned
eight and walked two. Both
teams made one error.
