PAGE EIGHT SECTION TWO I THE FARMS: mglN CHOWAN COUNTY I By C. W. OVERMAN. Chowan County Aaonl ( 11m Rotary (too is an idea) implement for cultivating crops, according to Sidney White of Enterprise Conununity. Sidney says that ho has used his pull type rotary hoe for three sea sons and during these three sea sons he has spent less than S3O for hoc labor. f A rotary hoe must be operat ed at a fast speed to do a good job. This means a speed of at least five to seven miles per hour. Mr. White has used his gang-type rotary hoe cn conon, coin, peanuts and soybe* dur ing the last three seasons. Ap proximately fifty acres of crops are worked with the rotary hoe in a good working day. The reason many farmers find rotary hoes unsatisfactory is be cause of improper operation and improper setting. Either pull type or mounted floating type rotary hoes must be operated at a fast speed. Floating type ro tary hoes should be mounted so that they might penetrate the soil at one and one-half inches. The cultivator hoes should be set as nearly flat as possible and the ones next to the rotary hoe Should be set so that they throw the dirt into the later half of the rotary hoe. This setting causes the rotary hoe tines to serve as a fender leaving a flat type row rather than building it up in the center. We will be glad to assist as many interested farmers as possible in setting their floating type rotary hoe and cultivators for good per formance, if they will just call on us. A Telephone Surrey is being conducted by the people in each community of Chowan County. The purpose of this survey is to j determine who wants telephones j and those who are dissatisfied] with the service they presently] have. Mr. Marion Shuffler of the S*ate Rural Electrification Au thority Office is assisting with the survey. Several leaders in each community are dividing up the roads in the community and making a house to house survey. U date, the survey has been. started in Ycopim. Advance. Qum Pond. Rocky Hock, Center Hill and Ry.land communities.! We hope to get the remainder nfithe white communities start ed this week. Onnie Charlton and Fletcher Lassiter are-work ing with the Negro communities i at tire same time. Wien the survey is complete, we should know how many peo ple in Chowan County want telephones. Mr. Shuffler will spot these homes and businesses on a county map. We should al so know how many people who have telephones are dissatisfied with their present service. This information will lw> presented to the telephone company of this area for their consideration. Grove Community Building on Monday. Tuesday, and Wednes- ! day nights of last week. An j average of about 38 people at-1 tended and participated in the school. Mr. Lonnie Powell of the Statej Recreational Commission con-' ducted the school. The games! taught were quite varied to suit most any group. Some of them j could bo used for very small! crops while others were more suited for large groups. Wej hope that these leaders received. good training which they will; remember and put to use in i their respective communities and ! organizations. Artificial Crop trying is be ginning to find some interest in; Chowan County. Our farmers • appear to be interested in the type of drying equipment and facilities which may he used for peanuts and also grain. Specialist E. S. Coates spent part of a day with me in dis cussing plans on two farms. Plans for a metal bin system are available through the Coun-j ty Agent's office. Plans for a wooden building are about com- ' pleted and will be available, very shortly. It is estimated that the wooden structure and 1 equipment will cost approxi-] matcly one-third less than the] metal bins. • i Farmers who are considering : constructing facilities and in-; stalling drying equipment for this year should begin making plans now. This is necessary so j that the equipment and build ing will be complete and ready; for use when needed. We will be glad to render assistance ip i planning if interested farmers will just call on us. Through the ASC Office a substantial! loan for such equipment may be obtainevt. •' * l.c N I 6HPBYB Raleigh "Die Motor Vehicles, Department’s summary of traffic deaths through 10 A. M..
