B-70 Program I have con sistently advocated the develop ment of the B-70 plane program as a mighty deterrent force. You will recall my expressed con cern at the time it was announc ed that the Administration was going to eliminate the B-70. It is welcome news to me that there are now indications that the B-70 plane may become a part of our weapons arsenal. Depressed Areas My vote against overriding the Presiden tial veto of the depressed areas bill was predicated on the 'truth that there is no place on earth more depressed than the Treas ury of the United States. Spe cifically, our national debt is soaring to nearly $290 billion. To mortgage future generations for plant and capital investments by the fedex-al government in some sections would inevitably lead to fiscal ruin. There is a limit to which we can go in federal responsibility if we wish to maintain fiscal solvency. While they had judged and condemned her, they had forgotten that they themselves were sinners, too. He who remembers his sin is not likely to cast stones, always re membering the old adage of “There but for the grace of God go I.” Judgments must be made; they are inescapable. And to avoid making judgments we are ex hibiting moral failure. Yet, we would do well to remember that when we make them we must be aware that others may use the same standards against us. | This principle will lead us to j humility, generosity in our judg ment of others, and kindness to | ward our fellow men. In lecturing his followers about the “speck that is in thy brothers’ eye,” Jesus again strikes at the self-righteousness whiefy ruins right relationships with other people. The Golden Rule is essentially built on fair play, which begins by “know ing thyself”. All too often the people whose defects are so ob vious are the very ones who try to change their neighbors’ lesser defects. In teaching the Golden Rule Jesus put it in a positive form: “Do not unto others >whal you would not have others do to you; whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.'” In this positive form we find several challenges. It places a special responsibility on the in iividual to choose what he wants for himself. This implies that we should continually think of our needs in terms of moral and spriitual growth, and then treat others in such away that we all grow spiritually. We should pause and ask ourselves this question: “Is our attitude to ward ourselves revealed in the manner in which wc treat oth ers?” The Golden Rule is really an aggressive concept. We are un der a moral obligation to toko a stand for our own good and for that of others, too. Stand by our fellow men as we would have them stand by and for us. The parable of the Good Samari tan assumes that each man is obligated to practice the Golden Rule. The story of the judgment of nations in Matthew 25:31-49 assumes that every nation—pa- SCRATCH-ME-NOT WITH ITCH-ME-NOT Apply ITCH-ME-NOT.
