-«BCTfOW 0«3 PAGE TWO SOIL CONSERVATION NEWS By JAMES H. ORIFFIIV, Soil Conservationist i 'Gum Pond landowners have been busy this week clearing the right-of-way for their group drainage project. The State ’Highway Commission has furn ished 50 man-days of labor on ‘this project. They will receive benefits on three roads that cross the drainage area. - Plans for the drainage project have been prepared bv the Soil ,Conservation Service.- These are •being blueprinted for use by the 'local landowners in receiving 'bids tor the construction. The -improvement is about two miles 'of escavation of the main stream. This drainage project was first -For some reason, it was dropped ]by the local people. No further workk was done until this year i when a meeting of the land owners was called by Alvin *Evans. The ACP program is furnish >ing cost-share assistance to these ! 18 landowners on their drainage; ’project. Technical assistance is! .being furnished by the local soil district through the “Soil Conservation Service. We have too many areas of cut-over woodland not pro ducing the landowner any in come. The field day will be held at the Churchill farm of Carroll and Fahey Byrum about 10 miles north of Edenton on NC 32 high way. Conservation Farm Plan E. F. Parks of Hobbsville has revised his conservation farm plan. Included is a complete drainage system of open outlet ditches and tile. A woodland conservation pro gram of thinning a young pine stand and managing his older stands. Coastal Bermuda L. N. Hollowell reports that his coastal bermuda grass is looking good. He applied 2-4-D about two weeks ago to kill the broadleaf plants. Monday, May 31, he applied 700 pounds of 14-0-14 per acre. He thinks he will get some grazing after July on his 10 acres. Yates Parrish. Edenton, re ports that he has a lot of com petition from weeds in his coas tal bermuda grass pasture. He thinks it will come out all right after some grazing and fertilizer.
