PAGE TWO tWO ' I AROUND THE FARMS ; BOTIN CHOWAN COUNTY [, By C. W. OVERMAN. Chowan County Agwt Tha Cotton Intact Situation i: looking rough. Apparently ; great many of our Chowan cot ton growers are not paying am attention to it. If some grower: want to raise cotton to feed in sects maybe I should not be con cerned, but I am concerned about the income their families need and I don’t believe they can gel income from insects. Last Thursday. Harry Venters made the cotton insect survey, This covered the same fields we covered the week before. In fields where- a regular dusting schedule Had* been started promptly, the.'punctured square cbunt had not increased. In oth er fields, the punctured square count had doubled. The punc tured square count in undusted fields came up to 40 percent. Red Spider was found in some fields and had caused severe damage in some areas. Growers, look your cotton fields over carefully. Examine the squares on the plants, not just those on the ground. After a square is punctured it is about seven days or more before it falls off. The insect situation is serious. You should dust or spray every 5 to 7 days regard less of weather. To control boll weevil, use one of the following: 2‘a per cent Aldrin, 2 percent Dieldrin. 2 percent Endrin, 2 l i percent | Gnthion. 2*2 percent Heptachlor.| 10 percent Malathion, 2 x i percent! Methyl Para th ion. 10 percent Sevin, 20 percent Toxaphene. | To control boll worm also, you can get most of the above with 5 percent DDT in them. To con trol red spider use Trithion or. Ethion. It is advisable to change or alternate insecticides to get in sects which develop immunity.! Again, I remind you to dust every 5 to 7 davs until August 15th. The Japanese Beetle Is Still Working. About two weeks ago j I dusted my scuppernong grape- 1 vines. Now, I notice some] beetles on them again so I'll dust j again today. The beetles will continue to work until about 1 -Schenleu *OSO -IKSSi $095 l!iI 9wJ * | r |i it m - ‘.,L*A; .-^r W*f' ■ ■ # . pt- : ■ , ■ : s July 15 to 20. a The Woodland Field Day last Friday was halted by rain.
