-’Farm Safety Week: This Aec'.c i
is, National Farm Safety Week.
Will you observe and practice
safety measures this week, ext
week and throughout the ;vir?
It pays good dividends.
Look, motner, you really
would not mind if your little
toddling youngster sneaked into
the pantry or kitche- cabinet
an|d you found him e .ung Pab
lum between meals. But, how
would you feel if you found him
in the same locatio i eating rat
bait, ant or some other poison?
Recently a young mother told
me that she round her toddler
having a lot of fun spraying
himself with ant and roach poi
son. Immediately she took him
to the doctor who pumped out
his stomach to be sure no dam
age was done.
kße sure to put dangerous
emicals and insecticides under
l«H:k and key out of reach of
little one’s hands. This is just
one of possibly a million haz
ards we might mention.
Last Friday, I saw a nine-vear
old riding on part of a front
truck gate, holding to a rope
across the top. Hot day, shirt
tail flying, enjoying the breeze
but what if his hands or feet
had slipped? Isn’t it better to
be safe than be sorry? Practice
safety always, don’t take chances.
Federal Gasoline Tax Refund:
Farmers have until September |
30 to file for federal tax re- j
fund on gasoline use during the
fiscal year July 1, 1959 to June
30, 1960. See article on front
page of this week’s Herald.
Cotton Insect Situation: 801 l
weevil and bollworm activity is
showing a build-up in fields
where a regular dusting sched
ule is not being followed. We
are also finding some red spider ;
iiT spots. Green aphids and
£lack aphids (plant lice) were
found in some spots in several j
fields.
Two percent Trithion at 25
pounds per acre is very good
for spider mites and also will
help on aphids. Parathion is
also good, use 25 pounds of 1%
or 15 pounds of 2% per acre.
From now on use boll weevil
dusts containing 5% DDT so as
to get bollworms. too. Two per
cent Endrin or ten percent
Sevin alone should get both boll
Weevils and bollworms.

Grain Meeting on Thursday
Night: County agents of the Al
bemarle area are calling a grain
meeting Thursday night, July
28, at 8 o’clock at the Agricul
tural Building behind the Court
House in Elizabeth City. If you
sell com as grain, particularly if
you harvest early, this meeting
should interest you. If you are
a dealer, you are interested.
In recent years much corn
has been harvested early with a
high moisture content. Artifi
cial drying is necessary for
moist corn. Too much moisture
in corn, too fast drying, im
proper drying and other factors
have resulted in poor quality
grain.
Now is the time to plan for
better harvesting and storage
practices for this bountiful crop.
Let’s join together at this meet
ing and determine ways to keep
the quality of our corn high so
that top price will be received.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
An answer to problems of
strife, jealously, and hate will
be set forth Sunday at all Chris
tian Science churches.
Highlighting the Lesson-Serm
on on the subject of “Love” are
several inspiring experiences of
David which include Samuel’s
account of the sparing of Saul’s
life (I Sam. 26).
Citations to be read from “Sci
ence and Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy include this statement on
the protective power of divine
Love:
“At all times and under all
circumstances, overcome evil
with good. Know thyself, and
God will supply the wisdom and
the occasion for victory over
evil. Clad in the panoply of
Love, human hatred cannot reach
you. The cement hijJjej hu
; mamty will unite all interests in
I the one divinity” (571:15).
The Golden Text is from Ro
mans (13:10): “Love worketh no
| ill to his neighbor: therefore love
; is the fulfilling of the law.”

Fifty per cent of all farm pond drownings in North Carolina last
year occurred within eight feet of the shore. This means that a
rope or stick would have saved many of the victims. Here a
youngster demonstrates how a boat oar can be turned into a life
saving tool.

Not a single cracked
egg since Chevy
took over the route
| That ’6O Fleetside pickup you see takes
whatever kind of road comes along,
and makes about 250 stops a day dc
i livering eggs house to house for Mr.
j Harry Hansen of Missoula, Montana.
\ “With my previous truck," Mr. Hansen
writes, ‘*l always had some cracked
eggs. Cargo damage always cut into my
j profits. Rut the new Chevy eliminated
that problem completely. I haven’t had
| one cracked egg with my new truck
! and I’ve had up to a ton of eggs in it
without any difficulty... .1 didn’t know
• a truck could ride so nice.”
Chevy rides nice, all right: takes good
j care of fragile cargoes. But that’s not even
| the half of it. Torsion-spring suspension
I also means longer life for the truck, extra
i thousands of working miles, because the
sheet metal and body components take less
| of a beating. You can run off-the-road or
over back trails at faster safe speeds, too;
get in more trips a day, make more money.
| Those facts are as true of the big Chevrolet
! heavyweights as they are of the pickups,
i Any model you name. Get one on your job
and you’ve got the world’s most efficient,
I most economical way to haul any load
over any road. Your dealer will be happy
• to prove that statement any day you say.

built-in grill.
There are outdoor grills of
many kinds. Needed are rods,
pipes or bars placed two to three
inches apart over a bed of hot
coals. Hardwood or charcoal give
hot heat without- smoke or
flame.
The next time you have an
opportunity to go fishing, cli
max your outing with an out
door meal. You might enjoy
this meal:
Fish
Mixed vegetable salad
Potatoes (roasted)
Corn sticks
Lemonade
Spiced cookies
It’s fresh tomato time. To
matoes taste good and they are
good for you. They are low in
calories, high in vitamin C and
a good source of vitamin A. Now
is the time when you can cut
tomato slices thicker and serve
fresh torpatoes often. Also ripe
tomatoes can be stuffed with cot- j
tage cheese, other vegetables,'
meat or fish. Tomatoes may be
stewed, baked, fried or broiled.
