SOU CONSERVATION NEWS i

Members of the Watershed
Planning Party for the U. S.
Soil Conservation Service met in
Edenton last week and prepar
ed a work outline for the Pol
lock Swamp Watershed. This
work outline and schedule will
tie submitted to R. M. Dailey,
State Conservationist, Soil Con
servation Service, and to the
head of the Engineering and
Watershed Plans at Spartanburg.
S. C., for approval. This is ex
pected within a short time.
Preliminary investigation by
the Watershed Planning Party
reports, ‘‘that main streams and
principal laterals have deterior
ated to the extent that outlets
become inadequate for
drainage l 'systems and the timeiv
i■= nival ol runoff resulting from
abnormally heavy direct rainfall.
It appears that deterioration of
stream channel capacity has re
sulted from accumulation of de
bris both organic and inorganic
over a relatively long period ofj
Time. Substantial damage to
crops and pasture is caused by
Access surface water and inade
quate drainage of the produc
tive soils of the watershed. Ac-;
cordingly watershed needs con-|
aist of (1) land treatment meas-.
ures such as improvement of
dn-farm drainage facilities, con-j
servation cropping • systems, pas
ture seeding, and grass based
rotations; and (2) structural
measures consisting of main
stream and principal lateral
channels for the joint purpose j
of flood prevention and agricul
tural water management.”
Burnt Mill Creek Watershed
Construction of the main chan
nel has crossed U. S. 17 high-,
way and will soon be complet- i
ed. Two draglines are busy on 1
the project working toward the
September deadline of the con
tract. This project has 9 miles
of channel improvement work.
Land treatment work sched
pled in the Watershed Plan is ■
being carried out. A new con
servation farm plan has already
been prepared on Fleetwood
Bros, farm and one plan re
vised.
