V Army Pvt Clyde E. Bunch,
Jr,, recently participated with
other personnel from Company
C of the 23d Infantry in an
unprecedented march over 60
miles, of untracked territory on
the Kenai peninsula in Alaska.
Designed to test the ability of
a rifle company to operate tac
tically in rugged mountain and
Racier country, the trek re
quired only seven days instead
«t the allotted 12 days. The
troops, who negotiated cliffs,
streams, snowfields and treach
erous glaciers, carried 60 pounds,
including weapons, ammunition,
crampons, ice axes, and other
mountaineer equipment.
- The infantrymen were harass
ed throughout the march by at
tacks from a realistic enemy
three which was transported by
helicopter. The trek culminated
when Company C crossed a 2,-
000-foot ridge, slid down a
snowchute and captured their
objective. Portage Airfield which
was defended by the acting
enemy force.
Bunch, who arrived in Alas
ka in April of this year, is
regularly assigned to the com
pany at Fort Richardson. He

Jackson. S. C.
A 1954 graduate of Chowan
High School in Tyner, Bunch
was engaged tn farming before
entering the Army in Novem
ber, 1959. His parents live on
Route 3. Edenton.

vous at the East Carolina Yacht
’ Club, located three miles up the
Trent River from New Bern,
i Saturday, Sunday and Monday,
September 3,4, and 5. Tar
Heels Afloat is the organiza
tion of boat owners and other
people interested in boating and
! waterway safety. The organiza
tion meets regularly for cruises
each Memorial Day and each
Labor Day. Everyone who is
interested in promoting North
Carolina Waterways as well as
j a week-end of boating festivi
, ties an dentertainment is invit
ed to attend.
The program will start ’ on
Saturday with registration be
ginning at noon and dinner and
dancing in the evening. On
Sunday, there will- be an im
port Shippers’ Meeting to be
followed by a boat parade down
the Trent River and a country
style barbecue supper. Boats
will return to home port on
Monday. All of the facilities of
the East Carolina Yacht Club
will be available to the guests
and boat owners.
