Been on vacation. Nope. Didn’t
go where I wanted tq go: tile
Hawaiian Islands. But I creat
ed a little Hawaiian atmosphere
with my guitar. The only thing
lacking, though, was a coupla
shapely, grass-skirted hula girls
6-swinging and a-swaying.
Here’s a sobering thought that
may cause you to stop and think,
if you are dissatisfied with your
4 job or the way you imagine life
* is treating you: Everybody is
L expendable, and nobody is in-
T dispensable!
MAGICAL THOUGHTS Did a
little magic on my vacation
while loafing around. I have
a few magic props left from a
once sizeable and professionally
equipped collection. And every
once in a while I dig ’em up
and do a few tricks for my owni
amusement and entertainment.]
KNOW VOW SOCIAL SECURITY
John T. Grooms, representative of the Social Security
Administration, is la Edenton every Thursday at the North
Carolina Employment Security Commission office in the
Ctiisens Bank Buildng.
Are you losing social securi-j
ty benefits? Every year about
this time the Social Security]
Administration runs a study!
called Loss of Benefit Survey.!
this survey, we foundj
v persons in this area who were'
losing social security benefits. |
Oou can probably number some |
of them among your friends and
acquaintances. To prevent thisj
loss of benefits, you should take
stock of yourself right now; and
keep this article on hand or in
with your personal papers.
There are four times in your
lifetime when the Social Se
curity Administration wants to]
see you, your wife or next of (
kin. By that we mean, we wantj
you to come in and talk with!
us. These four times to contact!

in the case of disability, when
you reach'retirement age (62 fori
women, 65 for men), or when
you reach age 72 and are still
working.
All types of benefits paid by
the Social Security Administra
tion are covered in these four
events.
l When one of these things oc-:
curs, what should you do? You
should i get in touch with your
social Security office— bringing (
with you your social security
number or that of the deceased.
Any time a person has a so- 1
cial security card and has
worked on jobs included in so
cial security, there is a possi
bility of benefits being payable.
Do not trust your own opinion
on possible social security bene
fits. Don’t trust the opinion of
friends and neighbors, no mat
ter how well meaning they are.
Come to the social security of-1
fice where you will receive a]
positive; and factual determina-i
tion of! your entitlement to so
cial security benefits.

THE CHO WAN HERALD
There is something fascinating
about the art of magic (it is
an art, you know) that once
undertaken never releases its
hold on you. It is like writing—
once you get printer's ink on
your fingers, it never comes off
entirely.
Inexorably, drawn like a steel
needle to a magnet, if two peo
ple in the same town are in- 1
terested in magic they will
eventually cross each other’s
paths. Recently I became ac
quainted with Verne Gainer, ai
professional wrestler and show
man, whose interest and pro- 1
ficicncy in things magical equal- 1
ed, and in many cases excelled,)
my own. Gainer’s interest and,
knowledge of professional magic!
has exceeded the amateur, and]
no doubt with 15 years theatri-j
cal experience behind him, he
will make an excellent proses-j
sional magician—which is pres- 1

MY ( H
AND EXPERIENCES
By Judy Haste
I joined the 4-H Club in 1955.
i Miss Helen McDonald and Mr.
R. S. Marsh were the assistant
agents working with the 4-H
Clubs. I was elected chairman
iof the program committee for
the Chowan Junior 4-H Club.
Miss McDonald talked to us
about the different projects we
could take. I decided to take
the Food Preparation project,
since I was interested in learn- 1
ing to cook. Breakfast was my |
first step! I enjoyed 4-H very,
much my first year.
In 1956, another year of 4-H
work had started. We elected!
new officers and I, again, was,
elected program chairman. This)
year, I took the second step
in food preparation which was I
the lunch and supper unit. I'
worked hard on my project book j
during the year and my efforts!
paid off. At the County
Achievement Program I was
awarded the Food Preparation
Medal as County Junior Food
Preparation winner.
In 1957, I was elected presi
dent of the Chowan Intermedi
ate 4-H Club. This year I took
freezing and food preparation
as my projects. We were given
a Health Improvement record

to fill out, also.
This year I‘ joined the Center
Hill Community 4-H Club, and
I was elected secretary-treasurer.
Our community club had a
booth at the County Fair and
got first place for the exhibit.
We were very proud of this ac
complishment. At the County
Elimination Contest I was cho
sen Health Princess of Chowan
County. I was glad I had work
ed hard on my Health Improve
ment Record Book.
I gave a Dairy Foods Demon
stration with Betty Jean Smith.
We made two drinks which were
the “Purple Cow Drink” and
“Orange Blossom Milk Shake”.
We received first place in the
Junior Dairy Foods Demonstra
tions. Betty Jean and I had
worked hard in learning to give
this demonstration. Since it
was a first time for both of us
we were determined to do our
best. j

Nematode Program !

Raleigh One hundred dol

, a new nematode control program
developed by disease control spe
cialists at N. C. State College.
'lt's a long-range program
planned according to the severity
of the nematode problem in each

ing to tobacco disease specialist .■
Furney Todd.
Main ingredient of the new
program is “reading the roots”
or measuring the degree of .nem
atode infestation. Then, through |
the use of a “root-knot index" 1
the long range program is de
veloped. *
But to be effective the pro- j
gram must be put into effect !
within a few days after the final
tobacco leaves arc removed from
the stalks. Todd emphasizes.
I Tile specialist says about one
man hour of labor is required
for reading the roots on each
acre. A sample system is used
whereby about one of each 200

Research has shown that in a
i severe infestation a good con
trol program can increase re
turns by as much as S3OO per
acre. If the infestation is light
and the soil is fumigated where
I it is not needed, the grower can
j decrease his net returns by as
'much as SSO to SIOO an acre.
Thus, the conservative figure of
SIOO per acre for the investment
of one hour's time.
“About half the growers are
using fumigants,” Todd says.
“While many growers need this
fumigation, others are wasting
money.”
Soil fumigation is of value
only where nematodes are a
problem. Where nematodes are

emphasizes.
