The wreckage was carried to the Al bemarle Sound bridge and for fear of damage to the bridge traffic was also stopped over the bridge. With the approach and force t of the hurricane broadcast over the radio, many people sought shelter. The Edenton armory was opened for this purpose, where over 200 gathered during the brunt of the storm. At the John A. Holmes High School al most 100 gathered and over 100 scampered to the colored school for protection. Many also sought shelter at Chowan High School and White Oak Consolidated School. Members of the Na tional Guard and other people at the various places offered as sistance to those housed in the shelters. The Edenton Street Depart ment swung into action when the storm subsided and early Monday morning did a splendid job in cutting and removing trees and huge limbs which blocked traffic on many streets. Electric & Water Department employees, too, made a splendid contribution by removing wires on which trees had fallen. All day Monday trucks were busy handling debris from streets, but it will require several more days before all of the cleaning up job can be finished. T. A. Loving Construction Company,, contractors for the sewer line on U. S. 17 North, very generously furnished trucks and men to help haul away debris at no cost whatever to the town. Many comments have been made concerning the effi cient manner in which the Street Department as well as others handled the emergency. Despite the heavy damage, however, no lives were lost and no serious injuries were report ed, Edenton Native Publishes Book Continued from Page I.
