There is no way to estimate the good that this $8 million invest ment will benefit the Yadkin Valley and all of North Carolina. THE CHOWAN HERALD. EPEHTOH, WORTH CAHOUHA. THPHgPAT- OCTOBER 13, 1960. Naturally, I was glad to partici-j pate in the ground-breaking | ceremonies recently near Wilkes-, boro. 1 Wilkesporo Reservoir On 1 April 25, 1960, I testified before the Senate Appropriations Com mittee with my colleague, Sena tor Jordan, in behalf of funds' for the Wilkesboro Reservoir and. other water projects in North Carolina. I pointed out that the progress of North Carolina is vitally connected with the de-, velopment of its rivers and har bors, flood control, navigation, : and erosion prevention. More |over, a prime national interest .is involved in these projects -1 These projects, I reminded thej ’committee, can no longer truth fully be called ‘‘pork barrell”| legislation, for I am convinced that our fundamental welfare is 1 involved in the protection and! development of our national re-j sources. In speaking before the com mittee about the Wilkesboro: Reservoir, I stated that for two centuries man has seen the Yad kin’s flood uncontrolled. All too vivid in the memory of the resi dents of the Yadkin Valley is the 1946 flood which is estimat-1 j ed to have caused a loss of $6 million. The average annual | loss now is said to be about ! Fruition Os A Dream—Just as ;we are pleased with the devel j opment of the harbors at Wil j mington and Morehead City and j other North Carolina projects | - through civil functions legisla- ( tion, the Wilkesboro Reservoir is j the fruition of a hope and 'dream j of long standing. This ran i through my mind pa l happily! joineu with Senator Jordan,/ | Representative Kitchin and oth-' ers in the ground-breaking cere-' monies.
