What Does Industry
Mean To Community?
Governor Hodges’ proclamation
designating the week of Novem
ber 28-December 3 as “Indus
try Appreciation Week” in North
Carolina has again brought to
the forefront the question: What
does an industry employing 150
men, for example, mean to a
community?
The answer to this question,
according to William R. Hender
son. industrial development ad
ministrator for the Department
of Conservation and Develop
ment, is one that should cause
North Carolinians to stop and
think as they discuss the im- ‘
portance of industry to their I
jc; ~
communities and to the State, j
A national study, Henderson
skid, has found that an indus
try providing jobs for 150 men
1 ifi a community roughly means
this:
An annual payroll of $350,000.
A plant investment of $300,000.
’ A ten-room school house.
Sales and service for 400 cars.
A dozen stores.
'. A taxable valuation of over a
million dollars.
The support of 1,500 people.
Public improvements.
An annual expenditure in
trade of two million dol
lars.
Yearly markets for SBOO,OOO in
agricultural and other
farm products.
“Industry Appreciation Week”
is being sponsored by the North
Carolina Association of County
Commissioners. Boards of com
missions in each of the State’s
JOO counties have been requested
by Gov. Hodges and Ben W.
Haigh, president of the North
Carolina Association of County
Commissioners, to plan special
programs honoring industries
which now provide jobs for
more than one-half million
North Carolinians.
