SENATOR Al A SAM ERVIN says *, Washington As Thanksgiv ing Day passes and Christmas Day approaches, it is traditional for Americans to take stock of their blessings. This is as it should be. National Defense —One of the things that strikes me as indica tive of the awareness of the American people of the blessings of democracy is their insistence on adequate national defense. My experience is that the citi zens of North Carolina, for ex ample, are ready to make what ever sacrifice is necessary and prudent to help .guarantee that this country shall continue as a, free nation. Decisions by high-' level authorities in Washington,] reversing the dangerous military , skimping of recent years, are encouraging to me arid reflec tive of the public’s interest in adequate national defense. For example, the decision to eliminate the B-70 program was a mistake of great propor tions; now that decision has been reversed, proving that the peo ple, speaking through Congress, were alert to the needs of our country and wanted adequate manned bomber striking power in our weapons arsenal without relying almost entirely on mis siles. For this one reversed decision alone, Americans can be truly thankful. It, combined with other decisions for better na i tional defense, can be a great ' deterrent of war. No citizen wishes public money squandered !on programs of doubtful value to this country, but the neces sary defense activities must be maintained. I expect to con tinue to support necessary de fense spending. I never want to see the risks taken that were j taken at the expense of our , very existence.
