Edenton friends will be de
lighted to learn that Jerry Mc-
Laughlin, a former Edentonlan,
has been named airman for the
month of December at Shaw Air
Force Base in South Carolina.
A letter to Young McLaughlin
from his commanding officer,
Capt. George E. Swinford, fol
lows:
“Airman McLaughlin, I per
sonally want to offer my sin
cere congratulations to you upon
being selected Airman of the
Month for December 1960. You
have attained a goal and posi
tion, desired by many, and ac
tually known by few. This can
only be accomplished through
Ifong and hard work. You have
yoven your leadership among
and capabilities in your ca
reer field. You have attributed
great credit, not only to your
self, but to this squadron, this
base, and the United States Air
Force as well. I feel sure that
. you will continue to possess this
outstanding character and mili
tary bearing in your future days
in the Air Force.

Hertford Girl Killled
In Automobile Wreck
Miss Edith Rachel Spivey,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carson
D. Spivey of Route 3, Hert
ford was kjllled in an automo
bile accident at Midway in Ber
tie County Sunday afternoon.
Miss Spivey, together with two
companions, Miss Allen Jeanette
Williams and Miss Shelly Jean
>Cverton, were returning to East
Carolina College at Greenville,
when their car and one driven
by Mrs. Gertrude Small Boyce
of Edenton collided.
According to State Patrolman
Phil Bragg, who investigated the
accident, Miss Spivey was driv
ing on the right side of U. S.
17 when Mrs. Boyce entered
from the Merry Hill road, throw
ing Miss Spivey to the pavement.
None of the others involved in
the accident were seriously in
jured.
Mrs. Boyce is charged with
manslaughter and is scheduled
for trial in Bertie Superior
Court in February.
Miss Spivey was an outstand
ing student at East Carolina Col
lege, as well as Perquimans High
School before entering college.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday afternoon at the grave
side in Cedarwood Cemetery in
Hertford.

ing the State 4-H Recognition
Day Saturday, December 3, at
A. and T. College in Greens
boro.
The State Recognition Program
is held annually to honor 4-H’ers
who have done outstanding work
on their projects and presenting
various demonstrations.
James and David were recipi
ents of first place ribbons and
certificates for state winners in
the peanut production demon
stration. The title of their dem
onstration was “The Fertility
Requirements For Peanuts.” The
demonstration was approximate
ly 15 minutes long and illustrat
ed the amounts of different plant
food elements removed from the
soil and how much of each is
needed to be supplied to produce
2,000 pounds of peanuts per acre.
This demonstration will be
given by James and David at
the peanut production meeting
this winter, which should be of
interest to all peanut growers in
the county.

Store Hours For
Local Merchants
According to the Merchants
Committee of the Edenton
Chamber of Commerce, stores in
Edenton will begin Monday, De
cember 19, to remain open every
night until 9 o’clock. This ac
tion is taken for the conveni
ence of shopDers and will re
main in effect until Christmas.
The stores, however, will remain
open every Saturday night un
til 9 o’clock from now until
Christmas.
Merchants plan to observe
Monday, December 26, as a holi
day and will also close Monday,
January 2, in observance of New
Year’s Day.
The above schedule of hours
was decided upon following a
poll of merchants on Broad
Street Tuesday of this week.
AUXILIARY MEETING
