England At One Time Banned Celebration of Christmas As Holiday Christmas celebrations become so merry in Merrie Old England that they were abolished. World Book Encyclopedia notes that the Puritans prohibited the boisterous observances in the 1640’5. They threw out minis ters who dared to hold services on Christmas Day and jailed anyone who didn’t treat Decem ber 25 as a common work day. But while the Puritans were taking over Engiind under Oliv er Cromwell, they were losing the battle of Christmas. Riots broke out in 1647 protesting the ban on the holiday. And an outraged group of 10,000 men passed a resolution declaring that if they couldn’t celebrate Christ mas, they’d just as soon have the king back. A few years later, the Puritans prudently beheaded King Charles I. But the English people in vited his son Charles II to come back in 1660 and Christmas, as well as the monarchy, was re stored to England. • HELPFUL INVESTMENT SERVICES APPRAISALS....QUOTATIONS.... || SECURITIES ANALYSIS....FRIENDLY GUIDANC6 Call our Representative in this Area Carolina Securities !/, ' v £ rr !, n S Corporation I \3tu.tsfmßnts tor PHONE 2466 Members Midwest Stock Exchange §§£ CHARLOTTI • RALEIGH • NIW YORK CITY THg CHOWAN HERALD, EPEWTOIf, WORTH CABOUT A, THUHBPAT. Leaping to his feet, Pe ter protested, only to be told by Jesus, in a gentle tone, “If I do not wash wou, you have no part in me.” Then Peter, in shame and remorse, sobbed, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” And when He had finished with the last man, including Judas, who Was to so basely betray him, Jesus stood and said to them: “I have given you an example . . This truth is supported not only by the example of Jesus, who, through self-forgetting service became the greatest among men, but by our own personal ex periences. Life, we discover, is a carbon copy of our Lord’s parable about the grain of wheat. The grain which is left behind in the granary flourishes, completely self-sufficient, for a while, but eventually withers and dies, its purpose in life unfulfilled; while those .grains which are sewn give forth in bounty, in service of mankind. We are like that. So long as we are wrapped up in self-concern, the better part of us is in chains. But when we lose ourselves in loving service to a noble ideal, or to a great cause, especially that represent ed in Christ, we find the per fect freedom. Self-seeking creates conflict. Every recorded instance of strife occurring among the disciples grew from contention about place and position. Excessive self-concern always breeds strife —whether in the home, the church, industry, or among na tions. On the other hand, con cern for others—concern express ed in self-forgetting service— makes- for both harmony and happiness, within and without. , So men have found Christ to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. To remember him is to love him, to love him is to wor ship him, to worship him is to serve him, to serve him is to serve one another in his spirit, and so to serve is to reap the fruits of peace and joy. “——- t These comments are based on outlines of the International Sunday School Lessons, copy righted by the International Council of Religious Education, and used by permission).
