SECTION THREE SOL CONSERVAPON NEWS By JAMES H. GRIFFIN, Soil Conwrrationisf Earl Jones and C. E. Lupton, Edenton, are planning to estab lish a grass waterway and tile drains rather than, dig the open ditch they thought they needed. Last Thursday, Work Unit Conservationist James H. Grif fin met with both farmers to advise them on the proposed ditch on the property line. A look was taken of the site for the ditch. Soil survey maps of the two farms were studied. It was found that the soil on the| Jones farm was Craven fine; sandy loam, a soil moderately well-drained but noted for sur face water problems. Soils on the Lupton farm showed the need for internal drainage. Mr. Jones was advised that a: grass waterway would solve his water problems and provide the farm road he needed. Also, that the proposed open ditch might start an erosion problem due to I the soil type gnd slope of the 1 Straight Kentucky - Bourbon jrf SP-**. ! The nearby swamp provided an ade quate outlet without an open ditch. Cost of the tile systems was figured and Mr. Lupton de cided on the • tile. Both men are happy with the technical ad vice. Now, they realize the need for re-planning their farms. Soil and water conservation plans have been prepared on both farms but are out-of-date. Mr. Jones has requested the Chowan County Supervisors for techni cal assistance to replan his farm as soon as possible. He is sched uled for assistance in 1961. Both men feel that by being district cooperators, thev have profited. Otherwise, thev would have dug a dragline ditch to solve a surface water problem THE CHOWAN HERALD and an internal drainage prob lem. Now they have to correct practices to solve this individual problem. These two practices will be added to their respective soil and water conservation plans. , [ Club Calendar ] Christmas traditions will be the .demonstration at the Home Demonstration Club meetings in December.
