Apple trees should be set at least 30 feet apart, peach trees 20 feet apart, grape vines 15 feet apart. Dig a hole large enough to put a bushel apple basket in for each tree, this breaks the soil thoroughly and gives your young plant a good chance to start a new root sys tem. Fruit trees and bunch grape vines need a good winter spray ing with liquid lime sulfur, Bor deaux Mixture, or some other good dormant spray to kill the disease spores and scale which lives through the winter on the tree or vine. Follow directions for the material you are using. We have Extension bulletins which give you complete infor mation on spraying fruit trees and vines, so come get what you need or let us know and we will mail it to you. Another important winter job is pruning. Apple and pear trees should be thinned but not cut back more than necessary. Peach trees, plum and other stone fruits should be cut back as well as thinned. These trees should be kept reasonably low so that most of the fruit may be picked from the ground. Leave the strong branches and cut out the weaker branches in your pruning operation. It is well to piune and then apply your winter spray, but the spray must be applied before the buds begin to swell in the spring or else injury may occur. Planning For 1961: I realize that this is Christmastime and let’s be sure to enjoy it, but we might also want to think about planning for the new year. In your planning, you will want to provide for gbbd rotation of your crops, especially from the stand point of disease control. Very important is soil testing. Now you have ample time to take a soil sample of each field, pre pare your information sheet and mail both to the soil testing di vision from which you should soon receive a report showing whether you need lime, and giv ing you a guide for your fertiliz er program for the crops you desire to grow. While you are taking soil samples, why not take samples of the fields where you will grow peanuts during the next three years? Now is a good time to check your ditches and main drainage lines for needed clean-out or other re pairs. This week I was walking along a nice drainage canal and came across a place where Don-; na had blown down a tree >n the canal. Such trees make an excellent stoppage for sediment 1 and trash which soon builds up 1 and gives trouble at other points. Then you may need new ditch es.
