families try to keep Christmas,
they are reminding the world
that Christ is a part of their
lives today—not just a fact of
history. As they offer their gifts
qf faith, hope and love, they are
putting into practice this
thought—
The road to Bethlehem runs
“Not only at Christmas,
But all the year through
The joy you give to others
Is the joy that comes to you.
The road to Bethlehem runs
right through
The homes of folks like me and
you!”
Christian parents are becom
ing increasingly concerned over
the need for making faith a
family affair—of living day by
day the religion they profess.
Family traditions at Christmas
time may include the tree, Santa
Claus, gifts, cards, the big fami
ly dinner—but Christmas offers
a rare opportunity to emphasize
the spiritual more than the ma
terial values of the holiday sea
son. Someone has said that
Christmas can be a “hollowday”
if we do not place emphsis on
the true meaning of the season
rather than on the festive holi
day.

THE CHOWAN TONALD. EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. DECEMBER 22. 1960.
Mrs. Mary Leggett Browning
gave an informative talk on
“The American Indians’’ at a
luncheon meeting of .the Eden
ton Tea Party Chapter, DAR, at
the Edenton Restaurant last
Wednesday.
Mrs. Browning stated that au
thorities agree now that the
American Indian originated in
AStia and migrated to this coun-
by way of the Bering strait
about 20,000 years ago.
She pointed out the Asiatic
appearance of the race, however,
she said, it is difficult to classi
fy the American Indian due to
the differences of dialects, the
nomadic? tendencies of some
tribes arid the customs of adop
tion and 1 inter-marriage among
the tribes:
Before the fifteenth century,
she said that the Indians were
well organized under the Long
House Treaty, which was the
equivalent Qf our present day
United Nations.
The treaty organization was
broken down by the white man
at the time of the French and
Indian Wars and finally by the
