In connection with the open
ing of the Civil War Centennial
observance, W. E. Bond, Chair
man of the Chowan County
Commissioners, on Monday of
this week made the following
proclamation:
Whereas, the President of the
United States, Dwight D. Eisen
hower, has proclaimed Sunday,
January 8, 1961, as the official
opening of the one hundredth
anniversary of the American
Civil War; and
Whereas, the President has
asked that this day be observed
as a National day of prayer;
and
Whereas, the State of North
Carolina, with its various coun
ties, contributed more men to
the Southern cause and suffer
ed heavier losses than did any
other State; and
Whereas, out of this tragic era
has risen a more jasting and en- i
during nation, and
Whereas, appropriate County
Centennial programs commemor
atiny North Carolina’s role in
this war will enable our citizens
to pay fitting tribute to the
brave men and women of this
significant period in the history
of our great State.
Now, Therefore, I, W. E. Bond,
chairman of the Board of Coun
ty Commissioners of the County
of Chowan, do hereby proclaim
this day Sunday, January 8, 1961,
as the official opening of Cho
wan County’s Commemoration of
the' Civil War anpl call upon all
citizens of our County to join
with the President and the rest
of the nation in observing this
eighth day of January, 1961, as
a day of prayer.
