PAGE TWO MttCCttH QMS Leaders Named To Serve On Heart Fund Raising Campaign Governor Terry Sanford has designated February “Heart Fund Month in North Carolina,’’ according to William E. Bond, Jr., I-fund raising representative of the Chowan County Heart Association. In a statement the Governor referred to the fact that heart disease annually caus es more than half of all deaths in the state and that “the cost in suffering to families and eco nomic loss to the state is incal culable.” 1 Because the American and North Carolina Heart Associa-j tions support heart research, in-j eluding projects at North Caro-; lina medical institutions; profes sional and public education, and' community service programs | “which have contributed signifi-1 cantly to the accelerated pro gress of the fight against heart disease,” the Governor urged that “all our citizens give this campaign their enthusiastic sup port and cooperation.” The Heart Fund drive takes place throughout February, Mr. Bond pointed out, and culmin ates in a door-to-door solicita tion on Heart Sunday, February 26th. Wake Forest Basketball Coach Bones McKinney is state chairman. Local leaders for the fund raising campaign are: Heart Sunday Chairman —West Edenton, Mrs. Bruce Jones, Jr.; East Edenton, Mrs. Charlie Wood; Rocky Hock, Mrs. Jack Leary; Cross Roads section, Mrs. Nor man Hollowell; Tyner, Mrs. B. P. Monds; Tag Day, February 11, j Ida Campen; Balloon Day, Feb ruary 18, Boy Scouts; Business, Canvassing, Bill Gardner andi Johnnie Goodwin; Road Block, February 19, Junior Chamber of Commerce. The full text of the Governor’s statement follows: “Heart Disease is the modern American Epidemic, afflicting more than 10 million people, in-! eluding half a million children. | It is responsible for more than half of all deaths annually ini this country. In North Caro-! ina, over fifty people die every ; day of heart disease —more than, from all other causes of death! combined. “The cost in suffering to fami-| lies and economic loss to the, state is incalculable. “The picture would be fnuch darker if these facts were not counter-balanced by the progress that is being made in the fight against .heart disease more,; medical authorities say, in past twenty years than in the| past twenty centuries. Twenty years ago, victims of heart at-1 tack and stroke were resigned to a remaining lew years of in-i validism. Today, three out of! four who have suffered a heart attack go back to work, and many stroke patients can be helped to return to near-normal! lives. “Today, new drugs and sur-! gery are being used to control) high blood pressure, inborn heart defects can be* corrected,! and diseased arteries replaced ! Rheumatic fever, forerunner of | rheumatic heart disease which; was a serious threat to children.! can be prevented. “Heart research, to which sci entists in North Carolina’s medi cal institutions are contributing, re''Continuing the conquest of this Number One Killer. Physi cians are being trained in our medical schools to use the new techniques coming out of the research laboratories. The pub lic is being informed that help is available and that the sooner ' it is sought, the better the chance of warding off serious trouble. i “The North Carolina Heart As sociation, with its parent body, i the American Heart Association, 1 fTtri colfeT ukli labm, yoritf CBUNfIRf, "tewmiwt. wm-tywni-^~gMi.vw.fir rttKmablV.
