It was reported that many dogs are allowed to run at large, some of which carry no license tag and are not vaccinated. It was decided to make an investigation and to consider a new or amended ordi nance in order to help the sit uation. Mayor Mitchener said he would write to the League of Municipalities for informa tion as to the best way to cope with the nuisance. With a land fill garbage area assured' on base property, the Councilmen gave some consid eration to acquisition of a com paction unit to haul garbage to the site. It was decided to hold a special meeting next Tuesday night in order to further con sider the type of new equip ment which will be necessary 1 for the change in garbage and! trash disposal. It was also, agreed that a committee visit 1 other towns to inspect the op eration of compaction units. Some consideration was given to repairing the building now housing the Police Department. These improvements called for repairing the wall facing the south and finishing it with stuc co, and also the possibility of repairing and refinishing the room adjoining the police sta tion for a more useful purpose than merely storage. The com mittee was requested to secure an estimate of the approximate cost to have this work done. Town Councilmen were unani mous in requesting an official letter sent to Merrill Evans con gratulating him upon his ap pointment as Chairman of the Highway Commission. A reso lution was also adopted request ing Mr. Evans and the Highway Commission to give serious con sideration to the improvement of U. S. 17 highway due to the anticipated increase in travel as the result of the Chesapeake Bay bridge-tunnel. The Councilmen also adopted a resolution favoring the con struction of bridges across Roa noke and Cashie Rivers between Plymouth and Bertie County. Jesse Harrell was reappointed as a member of the board of di rectors of Chowan Hospital. His term had expired and his work on the board as Town Council’s representative was very highly commended. At the meeting a resolution was adopted requesting Repre sentative Albert Byrum to in troduce a local bill in the Gen eral Assembly calling for in creasing court costs of defend ants from SI.OO to $2.00. The extra dollar will go to pay life insurance on Chowan County’s peace officers. ■ During the meeting Council man W. C. Bunch, Jr., express- j * ed his regret about leaving; Edenton. Memorial Plaque For Joseph Hewes Continued from Pag* 1, Section 1 farm near Kingston, N. J., and educated at Princeton College. In 1763 he moved to Edenton and in the same year was elect ed to the North Carolina Legis lature. In 1774 he was elected to the Continental Congress, and with the exception of a brief period when he declined to serve due to ill health, held office un ‘ til his death in 1779. As chair- J man of the first Naval Affairs j Committee of the Continental ' Congress, he is regarded as the first Secretary of the Navy. In Edenton Hewes was a large ship owner and merchant, and, was associated with the firm,! Hewes, Smith and Allen. He; was a member of the vestry of I St. Paul’s Church. The house owned by Hewes still stands at 105 West King Street and is now owned by Mr. and Mrs. J. H.
