Full Agenda Faces
Town Councilmen
Continued from Page I—Section 1
of complaints. It was reported
that many dogs are allowed to
run at large, some of which
carry no license tag and are not
vaccinated. It was decided to
make an investigation and to
consider a new or amended ordi
nance in order to help the sit
uation. Mayor Mitchener said
he would write to the League
of Municipalities for informa
tion as to the best way to cope
with the nuisance.
With a land fill garbage area
assured' on base property, the
Councilmen gave some consid
eration to acquisition of a com
paction unit to haul garbage to
the site. It was decided to hold
a special meeting next Tuesday
night in order to further con
sider the type of new equip
ment which will be necessary 1
for the change in garbage and!
trash disposal. It was also,
agreed that a committee visit 1
other towns to inspect the op
eration of compaction units.
Some consideration was given
to repairing the building now
housing the Police Department.
These improvements called for
repairing the wall facing the
south and finishing it with stuc
co, and also the possibility of
repairing and refinishing the
room adjoining the police sta
tion for a more useful purpose
than merely storage. The com
mittee was requested to secure
an estimate of the approximate
cost to have this work done.
Town Councilmen were unani
mous in requesting an official
letter sent to Merrill Evans con
gratulating him upon his ap
pointment as Chairman of the
Highway Commission. A reso
lution was also adopted request
ing Mr. Evans and the Highway
Commission to give serious con
sideration to the improvement
of U. S. 17 highway due to the
anticipated increase in travel as
the result of the Chesapeake Bay
bridge-tunnel.
The Councilmen also adopted
a resolution favoring the con
struction of bridges across Roa
noke and Cashie Rivers between
Plymouth and Bertie County.
Jesse Harrell was reappointed
as a member of the board of di
rectors of Chowan Hospital.
His term had expired and his
work on the board as Town
Council’s representative was
very highly commended.
At the meeting a resolution
was adopted requesting Repre
sentative Albert Byrum to in
troduce a local bill in the Gen
eral Assembly calling for in
creasing court costs of defend
ants from SI.OO to $2.00. The
extra dollar will go to pay life
insurance on Chowan County’s
peace officers. ■
