I—SECTION TWO PAGE FOUR Chowan Clubs Help Observe National 4-H Club Week How My Demonstration Has Helped My Project | By JOHNNY WINBORNE By giving a demonstration on wildlife, my project has become more interesting because while I am trying to interest other ■people in my project I obtain a 'better understanding of my pro ject. In giving my demonstration on Farm Pond Management, I learn the many different ways of do ing the things necessary to man age the pond properly. Some of these are: A. Digging the pond: There are many kinds of ponds which can be dug. The kind of pond used chiefly in Eastern North Carolina is dug by a dragline. In other parts of the state many people who want a pond con struct a dam and let water col lect behind it. These ponds us ually cover eight or more acres. B. Stocking the pond: It is recommended that the farm pond be stocked with bass and blue gill, although other kinds of fish may be used. C. Fertilizing the pond: After you have dug the pond, and stocked it with bass or blue gill it becomes necessary to fer tilize the pond. The pond needs fertilizer just as a field crop needs it. The fish don’t eat the fertilizer. The fertilizer causes What 4-H Club Work Has Meant To Us As Adult Leaders By MR. AND MRS. CARLTON PERRY Our 4-H story began a good while before we became Adult Leaders. It began 13 years ago when Carlton joined the Ad vance Community 4-H Club. He was shv and reserved, but the 4-H IDEA OF LEARNING BY DOING gave him self-confidence, and today he is the president of the Adult Leaders of Chowan County. This is a living exam ple of what 4-H can do. When we married, we both became 4-H leaders in the Ad-' vance Community. As we com plete our first three years, we not only feel we are helping, but that we have been helped. Every demonstration, report, and 4-H activity teaches us some thing new and interesting. We, too, are still “learning by do ing.” Advance Community 4-H Club has contributed many fine citi zens to the world. There have been five boys and two girls who have completed their 4-H CONGRATULATIONS to MEMBERS OF CHOWAN COUNTY 4-H CLUBS I \ for their ' Outstanding Work In Their Communities WE ARE PROUD OF EACH 4-H CLUB MEM BER ...AND PROUD OF YOUR PARENTS WHO HAVE ENCOURAGED YOUR 4-H WORK. “Live - Learn - Serve Through 4-H” Hobbs Implement Co., Inc. These insect larvae are what the bluegills feed upon. The bass in turn eat the young bluegill. You might say it is a round-about way to feed fish but it has been proveq to be the best. A mineral fer tilizer is best for your pond Organic fertilizers such as cot tonseed meal, blood meal, ma nure and leaves encourage pond scum. The Soil Conservation Service recommends 8-8-4. You may use 8-8-2, 10-5-5, or 12-12-4. To fertilize my pond, I used 6-6-12. It is important that the fertilizer contains as much ni trogen as phosphorous. An av erage pond requires from 800 to 1200 pounds of fertilizer each year. By listening to other demon strations, I have learned about other aspects of wildlife. At different contests I learned about bird houses, quail, trapping, planting food patches for wild life, snakes and many other wildlife projects. When you give a demonstra tion you meet many interesting people and experts on your phase of wildlife. work since we have been Adult Leaders, and we are gaining new members all the time. We are going to help them all we can with their projects and record books, and try to teach them the 4-H way of becoming bet ter citizen. The projects chosen each year by our 4-H members show their interest in their community. They have chopped wood for the community building, hauled and leveled dirt for the yard and are now planning to paint mail boxes. Each one is a wonder ful and interesting individual, and we love every one of them! We have two small children, i ages 2 and 3, and we like to think of them as “miniature j 4-H'ers.“ We hope that in a ! few years they will become ac tive in the 4-H Club. In our opinion, no club offers more than the spiritual, mental and physical growth that you can re ceive in 4-H. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. MARCH 8, 1961. My Trip To The National 4-H Gub Congress By LEON EVANS On November 26, there was a certain plane at the Raleigh-, Durham Airport awaiting 36 4-H’ers who were winners of the State in each project in 4-H. I happened to be one of these fortunate 4-H’ers. I was state winner in the forestry project. About 8 o’clock the plane left for Chicago for the National 4-H Club Congress. We had an eight course dinner served on the plane just before we arrived in Chicago. As we left the plane, we saw one of the largest airports in the world. A bus carried us to the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Here, we checked in and were shown to our rooms. The rooms were very nice. They had radios and televisions. There was only one meeting held on Saturday. It was main ly a “get-acuainted” party at the Palmer House Hotel sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Cor poration. On Sunday- we had a very inspiring church service at the Central Church of Chicago. On Sunday night a minister de livered the message at the Chi cago Sunday Evening Club. On Monday, the delegates took an all-day tour of Chicago.; We visited the large Internation-' al Harvester plant, Oak Park High School, Museum of Sci ence and Industry and many other places. We were entertained by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra an Monday night. Tuesday began by having a tasty breakfast ser ved by the Sears Roebuck Foun dation. We then went to the Studebaker Theatre for the Na tional 4-H Dress Revue. The boys attended a special lunch eon for the bovs and the girls went to the hotel. After lunch. Chowan 4-H Corn Contest By RICHARD WHITE ______ "(pi Each year the Lions Club sponsors a 4-H Club corn ban quet and gives prizes for the top yields in three different groups. The boys select a plot of ground to plant. We give this land special attention to get the largest yield possible. Some of the boys planted six to eight inches apart and fertilize two or three times. In the fall the Assistant Coun ty Agent or County Agent check our yields. After we turn in our record books, the agents grade them and determine the the boys went to the Museum of Natural History. After tour-, ing the museum, the boys had to walk back to 'the hotel in the snow. A Friendship Party was given by Coates and Clark, Incorporat- j ed, on Tuesday night. On Wed-i nesday morning, I didn’t have: any meetings to attend, so a 1 friend and I went to see the Chicago Bears practice football. We were invited by one of the players, Bill George. We return ed to the hotel for lunch given by the Ford Foundation. We then went to the International Amphitheater to see a rodeo and horse show. We had a box supper. We saw the many head of livestock exhibited at the show. We were in a great pa-1 rade before we left the amphi-1 theatre. On Thursday morning, I at-! tended a breakfast for the for-’ estry delegates. We were guests of the American Forestry Pro ducts Industry. The General Motors Corporation served us a j great meal for lunch on Thurs-( day. They gave each delegate, 1 a model of one of their products. We attended the Annual 4-H Banquet on Thursday night at the Grand Ballroom. The. top boy and girl in the National achievement was named at this 1 banquet. A farewell party was given after the banquet until twelve o’clock. Then the states gave their own farewell parties after then. I attended several of them. I caught up on part of my sleep on the plane on the way home Friday morning, but I missed my breakfast. Nation lal 4-H Club Congress is truly the most inspiring event I have i ever attended. winner. The winner does not always have the largest yield. It is determined by the quality of the record book and the yield. The boys are divided into three groups according to age. The winner in each group receives five dollars. TRY A HERALD CLASSIFIED I" . C 4-H HELPS OPEN THE GATE OF LIFE National 4-H Week | I < March 4-11 My 4-H Peanut Project By LEWIS EVANS In 1956, I had my first pea nut project. Since then I have j had one acre of peanuts each year. I have learned many im portant and interesting things about peanuts through my pea nut project. Sometimes, like when it came to chopping my peanuts, it didn’t seem a good project I soon learned that chopping my peanuts and keeping the grass and weeds out was one step in helping my peanuts have a better chance of making a higher yield and a better suali ty product. In 1956 I grew 2,- 365 pounds of peanuts—a feat which I was very proud of even though I didn’t get an honor able mention. In my 1957 peanut project I grew 2,943 pounds of peanuts on my acre. I was placed second in the contest with a total of 94 points out of 100 possible points. I was presented a check for five dollars. In my 1958 project I grew 2,520 pounds of peanuts on my acre; this was a little low. In my 1959 project I grew 2,770 pounds and came in second place and received a five dollar check. In my 1960 project I grew 2,- 440 pounds of peanuts but my record book brought me up to first place county winner. I got a gold trophy of which I am very proud.
