MoMullan, superin , tendent of public welfare, re- I ports that 116 persons in Cho j wan County received old age assistance during February with • $4,284 being distributed. There were 28 cases of aid to depend ent children who received *1,585. Thirty-nine cases of aid to per manently and totally disabled received $1,921 and 10 blind aid cases received $372. There were also 12 emergency assistance cases requiring the expenditure l of $216.31. • , Other financial assistance in- ( eluded sik cases hospitalized in, the county, $1,080.82, of which! the county’s part was $700.82, and four cases hospitalized out side the county, $70.80. Serving with Lewis on the Chowan County committee will be Bristoe PeiYy, Harry Ven ters, David Bateman and Murray’ Tynch, Jr. . Chairman Lewis says his com mittee has the responsibility of informing all cattle producers on the purpose of the referen dum, and- how 'the money col lected will be used. The com mittee will also urge all eligi be persons to vote in the refer endum. This is the second assessment referendum to be held by North Carolina cattle producers. The question at stake is whether they wish to continue their present assessment program for promoting the North Carolina beef industry. I%is applies to cattle sold through auction markets, hand lers or processors. The program was started three years' ago. Some $70,000 has been collected and put into pro moting the production, market ing and consumption of beef. A two-thirds favorable vote of all voting is required for the referendum to carry. All per sons who share in the proceeds from the sale of cattle for slaughter are eligible to vote. Polling places will be set up in one or more places in each of the state’s 100 counties.
