ers to study the watershed needs

' Coastal Bermuda grass sprigs

22, 29 and April 5 at the Frank
Wilson Farms, Tarboro, N. C.
Several Chowan County farmers
are buying sprigs for spring
plantings. Wilbur Hare is es

go with the 3 acres established
last year. George Bunch, Jr.,
is setting 2 acres this year. Fa
hey Byrum has 5 acres, plus
several other people.

Bonner Asks To
Revise Boundary
Os Fort Raleigh
Congressman Herbert C. Bon
ner, representing North Caro
lina’s Ist District, last week in
troduced a bill in the House of
Representatives, rebising the
j boundaries of the Fort Raleigh
j National Historic Shrine on Roa
noke Island.
“I have always felt the need
for the expansion of this his
torical site,” Congressman Bon
! ner stated.
“The present IBV2 acres do not
! adequately represent the histori
! cal land that was utilized by the
colonists. With an expanded
acreage the area can be made|
more attractive and give ade
quate space for the proper de
velopment of this National
' Shrine. It will also give arche
ologists more room for histori
cal research, discovery and de
velopment.”
The Fort Raleigh National His-
toric Shrine is well known. The
site preserves the scene of Sir
Walter Raleigh’s ill-fated at
tempts to establish an English
colony in the New World. It
was here that the agents of Sir
Walter Raleigh and subjects of
Queen Elizabeth, suffered or
died in the effort to begin the
conquest of the North Ameri
can Continent. The hardships of
the first colony (1585-86) and
the tragic -disappearance of the
“Lost Colony” Os 1587 gave fore
warning of the many practical
difficulties to be overcome be
fore conquest of the new Con
tinent could become a reality.
Bonner concluded, “We are all
proud of the attractive Eastern
North Carolina holds for tour
ists each year. We hope devel
opments of this type encourage
more people to visit our color
ful coast.”
