N. C. 1961 Peanut
Acreage Unchanged
North Carolina peanut grow
ers will plant 183,000 acres, the
same as in 1960—if they carry
out their intentions as reported
in a survey as of March 1„ ac
cording to the North Carolina
Crop Reporting Service. These
intentions include peanuts for
picking and threshing, for hog
ging off, and for other purposes.
The first estimate of the 1961

| Farm Bureau Backs
; Stand On Education
I Woodrow Lowe, president of
Chowan County Farm Bureau, j
voiced his approval of theJ
stand taken by the American 1 1
Farm Bureau Federation on ed-|
ucation at a Senate labor and J
1 public welfare committee hear- 1
1 ing on March 14.
The legislative director of the
American Farm Bureau Federa
tion said at the hearing, “ln-
J tervention by the federal gov
ernment” in financing local pub- I
lie schools could “stymie initia- 1
tive on the part of the local I
people who might get the im.l
pression that if they wait long’l
enough, the all-powereful fed--I
eral government will come in 1 1
and assist them.” Therefore, Mr. I
I Lynn said, "We will build more I
school rooms, pay our teachers I
j better, and improve the educa- I
! tion of our children if we pro- I
| mote local initiative and con- I
I tinue to finance our schools I
I through local effort.”
, Mr. Lowe said, ‘There is little I
t argument about the need for I
continued improvement in edu-1
cation. Our concern is how 1
should such expansion or im- I
provement be financed. Farm!l
Bureau from the county to the;l
national level agrees that thejl
payment, and thus control, I
should come from county and I
state levels at government rather |
than the federal government.” I
“Our State Farm Bureau poli
| cy,” he continued, “a policy ap
; proved unanimously by the vot
! ing delegates in November, states
I our feeling on this issue in a |
j few words. It is as follows: Wei
I maintain that the control, ad-1
' ministration and financing of our
I public school system must re
main identified with the sm.all
j est unit of government capable I
of satisfactory performance.”
Record ’6l Soybean
Acreage Is Indicated
March 1, 1961 prospective acre
age of soybeans grown alone for
all purposes is indicated at a
record 689,000 acres, according
to the North Carolina Crop Re
porting Service. On the basis
of the March intentions, the cur
rent crop acreage is expected to
be 10 percent above the record
plantings in 1960 and 54 percent
above the 1950-59 average. Some
increase in the acreage of soy
beans occurred each year since
1953 except for 1959.
