PAGE TWO -section owe Iredell Houses Will Be Opened For Visitors During Pilgrimage The James Iredell and the > James Iredell, Jr., houses will be open for the Pilgrimage of Co lonial Edenton and Countryside, April 14-16. This will be the first time that , the Iredell, Jr., house has been open in over 250 years. Both houses are similar in plan and I architecture. I These houses, along with a number of other historic homes and buildings, will be open to | the public for the three days of the tour from 10 A. M., to noon and from 2 P. M„ to 5 P. M„ Friday and Saturday and l from; 2 P. M„ to 5 P. M„ Sun- I day. | James Iredell was appointed (i Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court by George Wash -1 ington in 1790. In his home the Marcus letters, which had a great deal to do with the sign ing Os the Constitution, were re | written. Iredell, Jr., took possession of the house on West King Street about 1820 as a home and law office. The law office is now used 1 as a den and has the same | book shelves used by Iredell for| his law books. A candlelight march and color l slide will be presented at Kadesh A.M.E. Zion Church Friday / night. April 7, at 7:30 o'clock. James Johnston, local repre sentative of the N. C. Depart ment of Revenue, will be in his office April 4-15 from 8:30 A. M„ to 5 P. M„ to assist taxpayers in filing their income returns. I >•. » sw jr| &- t MMWMMMI y l It is interesting in the Iredell, Jr., house that the woodwork was onec painted with indigo dye, which was discovered by the present owners, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Shepard, when an attempt was made to refinish the wood to the original. Mrs. Shepard inherited the home from her father. Dr. Thomas J. Hoskins. The James Iredell house, lo cated on East Church Street, is owned by the State of North Carolina and in the care of the James Iredell Association and the Edenton Tea Party Chapter, DAR. In addition to the homes open for the tour Inglis Fletcher, not ed historical novelist, will be honored on the first day of the tour with Gov. Sanford dedi cating the day to her at 11 A. M., at the Court House. Also on that day there will be an autograph hour at 2 P. M., at the Cupola House, a showing of the film, “Ye Towne on Queen Anne’s Creek” at 5:30 P. M., and a testimonial dinner in the evening. Other events during the tour include an antique show and waterfront tours. The tour is sponsored by the Edenton Wo man’s Club. Headquarters will be at the Hotel Joseph Hewes. Admission for a block ticket is $4 and individual houses 50 cents. For information, write Mrs. R. J. Boyce, 205 West Church Street, Edenton.
