briefings in Washington by top
government leaders. Events in
Cuba, France, the Congo, and
Laos have placed our nation in
a precarious position. Soon a
new crisis may come in Berlin.
These trouble spots emphasize
that the problem we face is not
Simply a problem of what to do
about Cuba. It is what shall
we do to prevent a large num
ber of nations from falling to
world communism. For the
first time in nearly one hundred
years a foreign power has in
essence established an arsenal
90 miles off the shores of Florida
and the Monroe Doctrine has
been held in contempt by
Khrushchev. The danger of the
Western Hemisphere parallels
the dark hours of World War 11.
Bi-Partisan Unity Leaders
of both political parties have
united to back the President in
whatever economic and military
action he deems necessary for
the safety of our country. This
is highly commendable and has
had the salutary effect of
strengthening and readying the
nation for the decisions which
now must be made. It is well I
for all of us to recall the words j
of Rudyard Kipling who lived
in an age of war and knew
whereof .he spoke. The great
English poet said: “In courage
keep your heart. In strength
lift up your hand.”
